687899 2008-07-11 09:24:00 I have been given two 250 GB HDs that were used in a security server to archive video. I do not seem to be able to delete the partition on 1 of them and can only format 50% of the other. I tried to delete the partition by atempting to install Fedora 9 and XP. No luck. I also used an Win98 start floppy to delete non DOS partitions. It said it removed them by when I look there they were.

What next?

687900 2008-07-11 09:35:00 Connect them to another system, with XP and format them in my computer Speedy Gonzales (78)
687901 2008-07-11 11:02:00 use Darik's boot and nuke http://dban.sourceforge.net/ (just set it to single-pass re-zero or you'll be there for a week!)

or you could download whatever diagnostic program the company gives out (if they are seagate drives, get seatools) and just do a zero-fill.

Will remove 100% of partitions and will revert the drive back to the state it was in when it left the factory.

687902 2008-07-11 11:32:00 you should also be able to use partition Logic (partitionlogic.org.uk) - Its free, you simply download the pre made ISO image, burn it to CD ( full instructions on site) boot from the CD, select the partitions and delete - see screen shots / instructions on use on the site. wainuitech (129)
687903 2008-07-12 04:22:00 Use Linux G-Parted available as an ISO by Ubuntu or Linux Puppy ISO, both free. mzee (3324)
687904 2008-07-12 05:22:00 Or just (as root) "fdisk <enter>, o, <enter>, w, <enter>" to create a nice shiny new partition table. If whatever you're using still insists on being difficult, zero the first 5 sectors of the disk and try again (usually you only need sector 0, but occasionally windows doesn't play nice unless you nuke sectors 1-4 as well). 687905 2008-07-12 23:01:00 In the BIOS Setup of my old notebook i can activate/deactivate a write protection for the hd so that i can't format it. Maybe it's this... andi91 (13958)
687906 2008-07-14 01:04:00 I have downloaded Partition Logic and copied to a CD. It boot but hangs when "detecting hardware" at USB cybernerd (12461)
687907 2008-07-14 07:23:00 Have you tried booting without the usb plugged in then once booted plug it in? gary67 (56)
687908 2008-08-02 05:46:00 I used the DVD cable to run the HDD, the PC is a desk top with only one slot for a HDD. I formatted it in windows, but it only reads about 197GB where did the other 53GB go to. cybernerd (12461)
