687299 2008-07-10 04:04:00 A friend of mine has asked me how to burn a video file to a DVD if he wants it to have maximum compatibility with DVD players in the UK.

I never thought about it before, but I'm guessing that it would be burnt as region 0 by default (as there is no option in nero to choose region code or to add copy protection of any sort) and that he'd need to use PAL.

Does this make sense?

687300 2008-07-10 04:07:00 Just as long as you change the booktype to DVD, (in Nerovision, before you burn it)

Or change it in Nero / choose recorder / options down the bottom, it should play in anything.

It doesnt matter where you are.

So, I found out (its normally on automatic)

I dont think it sets a default zone if you burn it.

You can select PAL / NTSC / the country in its options.

687301 2008-07-10 07:46:00 Where's the option to set booktype? I can't seem to find it... Agent_24 (57)
687302 2008-07-10 08:00:00 On the last screen where you go to burn it (If youre using Nerovision)

Under recording settings (this may depend on the burner, not all burners support it). Up the top is the speed, underneath it, it says

Book type setting.

Automatic
DVD-ROM <-- change it to this
Physical disk type
Current recording setting

The same options appear if you run Nero burning rom / choose recorder / highlight the burner / options

If you change it in Nero itself it'll say:

You are about to change the booktype to DVD-ROM

This is the recommended setting for achieving the highest DVD-video playback compatibility

687303 2008-07-10 10:59:00 not all dvd burners can set the book type to dvd-rom. Its mainly only required for older set top dvd players anyway. utopian201 (6245)
687304 2008-07-10 11:17:00 Thanks Speedy.

Yes I know, most players should be able to handle almost any DVD format (apart from maybe DVD-RAM), but I have no idea what player might be used (and I don't think my friend does either) so I think it may be a good idea to try and set to DVD-ROM if possible, just in case.

I don't actually know if either of our burners can change booktype either! so I guess it's time to find out...
