427765 2006-02-06 04:17:00 Does anyone do this? Can you get a DVD burner and copy a TV program onto a disc just like you can with a Video? I've had a bit of a look of a look around (the net) and can't see anything. I know about I think they're PVRs. where you copy from the TV to a HDD. Seems like a neat idea too.

Anyway I'm thinking to buy a video to tape stuff off the telly but also thinking of a DVD for better quality and that that's the way things are drifting, more movies coming out only on DVD etc., (or could happen soon.)

I don't like combos and buying two units seems clumsy, so does anyone burn programs off the TV straight onto DVD?

Appreciatte your attention.....mark c

427766 2006-02-06 04:25:00 With some TV tuners like the Leadtek ones, the PVR program that you download for these, will let u record TV programs as MPegs, or burn directly to DVD. I recorded live 8 off TV 2 on this.

The Mpeg was 27GB. I burned some parts of it to DVD with Nerovision.

And the CVBS connection on them comes in handy. You can even record from a VCR. All you have to do is connect video out on a VCR and connect the audio out to audio in on the soundcard.

The Expert and Deluxe tuners also have FM tuners onboard. So u can record off FM radio and save the songs as MP3's.

427767 2006-02-06 04:27:00 Yes you can record off tv to dvd if you buy a dvd hardrive recorder but to record onto dvd you have to first record onto harddrive and then you can burn your programs onto harddrive using the archive button on philips dvd harddrive recorders. Hope this helps technophobia (8565)
427768 2006-02-06 04:40:00 Heh, As noted by Speedy you can burn to DVD on the fly, though it merely does it as an AVI file, meaning it wont playback on 99 percnt of stand-alone DVD players and seeing as its recording, encoding and burning all at the same time then quality make take a nose dive.

Your better off saving it to HD with a codec like Huffy, then authoring to DVD with your choice of DVD authoring software, This will ensure the best quality video, and 100 percent compatability with stand-alone DVD players.

Having said that, You cant improve upon the quality ofthe transmitted foorrage, which is low quality crap, as is the content of all our channels, If its only for the purpose of recording TV and you have a video already, you may as well use it.

427769 2006-02-06 04:41:00 Oh I see. Thanks for all that. So does a DVD recorder always have a HDD in it and data goes onto that first then copy to the disc?

So it is all possible? Why aren't we seeing ads on TV for this device? Seems better than using a video to me.

[edit: thanks metla, you got in before me.]

metla: when you say "You're better off saving it to a HD with a codec like Huffy.." you mean a HD as in a PC? Or one in a DVD Recorder? Does it matter? Well I haven;t got either at the moment but given the choice I'd buy a DVD that I can also use to get stuff off TV. That's the point.

I get the drift about "on the fly" and can see the probs. with that.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

427770 2006-02-06 04:44:00 It sounds like you just want a stand-alone DVD recorder (not a computer product) - these are now almost more common than video (tape) recorders - visit an electronic appliances store and they'll be able to help you .

You probably want a combo DVD/VCR recorder (as opposed to a Combo DVD 'player' + VCR recorder) . Companies like Panasonic and Sony (just released) make them and will allow you to record TV programs to either DVD or video (VHS) tape .

427771 2006-02-06 04:44:00 Uh...I was referring to using a computer with a TV card and DVD-Drive.

No idea about stand-alone recorders, But when my TV DVD player dies thats what I will be getting....Being entirely hardware based encoders I would say they would do a fine job of recording to DVD.

427772 2006-02-06 04:57:00 Great, thanks joe-exception, yes, what I want is a stand alone DVD player recorder-off-the-TV unit, not a VCR/DVD combo but if I've gotta have a combo then that'd be the one. I'll have a hunt round the shops next time i'm in the smoke.

And thanks metla for your clear explanations.

TVs need storage built in. Run it all from the remote.
