428370 2006-02-08 08:54:00 No problems. But to prevent me going nuts I should get a decent supply of iron in my diet. Though I found out that if both parents to have the same gene, then that child they have would be on blood transfusions for the rest of their life...
Same applies to me too.

Whew, glad I'm not on them...

428371 2006-02-08 09:02:00 When I was in Form 7, I decided to donate blood because some of my family and friends have donated theirs, and I thought it was about time I did it. The Blood Collectors came to my high school, and I had an NZSL interpreter with me, when I went up to the desk to ask for forms to fill out and all that. The person at the desk had no problem with that, and didn't ask any further questions.

But when it was my turn to go up and donate, the collector lady objected to it because I was Deaf. She said I could faint, and then she would not be able to talk to me while I was unconscious! People, that I told this story to - like my father who is a doctor - said that it was totally irrelevant, because if you're unconscious you can't listen to anyone. My parents rang the Blood Donations to complain and they were shocked themselves at the appalling attitude this lady had. Never heard what happened to her.

I've had many Deaf friends of mine donate blood without any problems. After my bad experience with this ***** of a blood collector (who wouldn't open up her mind to what I was trying to explain to her - like having Deaf friends who have donated, and still continue to donate) I've decided not to donate blood elsewhere, even if the people there allow me to. If they're going to be picky about small things, it's their (and potentially someone's) loss. Not mine - don't have that much time to waste.

Hence, I selected "No - other" rather than "No - not allowed" because in my view, I am legally allowed to donate blood, I was just barred from doing so.

Oh well, I got to eat some nice biscuits while waiting for my turn! mmmm choccy biccies....

428372 2006-02-08 09:04:00 I am donor, and popular too because of my blood group being the "universal" donor type meaning it can go into just about anyone (Group O, Rhesus Pos).

Only been stood done once for a year when I was involved in a vaccine trial.

I've also had it marked on my records to be an organ donor if I met an untimely death and my parts are usable. pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

One of the guys I work with got his 100th donation certificate last year as well.

I also have on my drivers licence "Donor" and not only that it is in my Will.
63 previous blood donations but my age may preclude this soon.

A Rh+ for me.

Thanks for doing this Jen as blood transfusions are needed by some people.

When I first donated blood the people would send you a note to say what it was used for. No names mentioned of course.

People who will not donate may be a little selfish or religious or medically paranoic.

I always got bikkies after donating.
I think you could try again if you really wanted to.
Deafness may be a bit of a handicap in some ways but I am sure it does not change your blood.
Sorry that you were put off so early in life.

428377 2006-02-08 10:02:00 It must be the lack of iron in my diet...

428379 2006-02-08 10:44:00 Having just come back from donating an armful (thank you Tony Hancock:)), I thought this might be an interesting question.

DOCTOR McTAGGART:
You're AB negative.
HANCOCK:
Is that bad?
DOCTOR McTAGGART:
Oh no - you're rhesus positive.
HANCOCK:
Rhesus?! They're monkeys, aren't they? How dare you! What are you implying? I didn't come here to be insulted by a legalised vampire!
