428811 2006-02-09 08:00:00 I've been musing about chaos theory - as you do - and wondering what the butterfly in China (or Central Park) is up to .

Then I chanced across this site where the sterling work of Professor Jim Hammer has uncovered the latent lepidopteral horror .

. obvious . fsnet . co . uk/butterfly/butterfly . htm" target="_blank">www . obvious . fsnet . co . uk

A sample:

Event One:
A butterfly - possibly a cabbage white, or similar variety - spreads itself across a leaf in New York's Central Park . It stretches lazily in the warm sunshine and contentedly flaps its wings . This motion generates a small current of air, barely perceptible, but sufficient enough to divert . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . . .
Event Nine:
Octopuses from all over the world gather in the Atlantic Ocean to protest . Their numbers are so great that they disrupt shipping and cut off the Gulf Stream, the current which supplies warm water to the North Atlantic . . . . .

And so it escalates . Anyone got a net? :nerd:

428813 2006-02-09 08:17:00 We have just witnessed a perfect sociological example of chaos Winnie.

A man sketches a little drawing in Denmark, then a little later all hell breaks out all over the world with about a dozen or so killed.

Oh? So there were Danish butterflies involved? Gad. :waughh:

428815 2006-02-09 09:09:00 Trouble is Winnie, physics doens't support this theory, despite chaos being involved .

But hold ya horses: Now if a man (or woman for that matter, but more likely a man, as you will soon observe, that's if you can get past this wee piece of mindless blather I'm writing at the mo . . . ) . . . where the hell are we, yeah ok, got it, Now if a man or woman for that matter, but much more likely to be a man . . . . . . . . whoa!

Ok! I'll let your superior intellects figure it out, to get you started (and not waste too much time with me blatheri . . . . . . ) . . . . . it's got everything to do with baked beans or onions or cabbage or a strong curry & beer or, combinations thereof (preferably) and, tobbacco and/or matches or a lighter or fire in general .

You think so?

"This phenomenon, common to chaos theory, is also known as sensitive dependence on initial conditions . Just a small change in the initial conditions can drastically change the long-term behavior of a system . "

I love chaos theory . . .

I love chaos theory...

As I said, despite chaos theory, you need to adhere to the wackier aspects of it to take the butterfly analogy on board in it's totality, I don't. Mind you, I only had a fairly cursory look at it and, some time ago at that.
