Just wondering, can you liken this word to "masochist"?

Cheers :)

428513 2006-02-08 19:43:00 James - Masochism is taking pleasure from your own pain, usually with sexual connotations. Schadenfreude is amusment of other peoples misfortunes without any sexual implications. That is how I have always used it but I could be wrong and there are some very good wordsmiths who contribute to this forum and I could be corrected. Also many writers will always use schadenfreude with a capital S Dally (6292)

Schaden is shame, and freude is joy, so it literally means taking pleasure from other people's discomfort. My missus says it's rather typical of the Germans' sense of humour. Greg (193)
