688974 2008-07-15 02:47:00 Presently I use Avast anti-virus and am thinking of using NOD32 trial version. I don't want to uninstall Avast and AFAIK it cannot be disabled. The assumption here is that Avast and NOD32 will not work at the same time so I am wondering if Avast can simply be turned off using msconfig.exe?

Avast has worked well for me and I have no complaints but everything I have read about AV's tells me that NOD32 is the best. There are no nasties on my WinXP - that I know of - so it will be interesting to see if NOD32 finds anything and if the time it takes to do a manual scan is shorter than Avast.

Thanks.

688975 2008-07-15 02:49:00 I spose thats one way to disable it in MSconfig. Altho, if you want to turn it back on you'll have to reboot all the time Speedy Gonzales (78)
688976 2008-07-15 03:37:00 As speedy suggested, you can stop Avast from Running in msconfig, when you install Nod32 it may detect Avast is installed, but you can tell it to ignore it and carry on with the install.

If you do this and all of a sudden funny things start happening, Eg: the two AV's start a fight - then you will know what the problem is.

Possible Problem:

Nod May? also detect Avast as a threat, and delete parts of it - thus rendering Avast useless if you decide to keep it.

688977 2008-07-15 05:04:00 Why not just uninstall Avast in Add/Remove and if it is saved on Local Disc you can just reinstall it later if you don't want Nod32 anymore. That is what I did and it all worked fine. lakewoodlady (103)
