430394 2006-02-14 20:44:00 Well the good news is that Telecom will now allow you to have a fixed IP on a residential line.

The bad news is that it'll cost you $20/month. Yeah there's a shortage, but $20?

Xtra provide ISP services.
Telecom provides DSL lines.

If you're buying a static IP off Xtra it is expensive. Stacks of other ISP's offer them at much reduced prices.

430396 2006-02-14 20:50:00 Yes, but I'm in the unfortunate situation of being in a contract with Xtra. If there was a way to get another ISP to provide the address without breaking the contract, believe me I would take it. Erayd (23)
430397 2006-02-14 20:52:00 Shortage?
How is that relevant?
If you are connected 24/7, as most on cable or DSL do then you are hogging one IP address 24/7. What does it matter if it is fixed or from a pool?

Its a $20/month "because we can" fee. Nothing more, nothing less.

Telstra-Cable has fixed IP by default

If you want fixedIP-DSL, then swap to IHUG :p

What does it matter if it is fixed or from a pool?True, but imagine if it assigned every customer a static IP by default. Not every customer is online at the same time, so it maximises their IP pool (although admittedly not by much).

If you want fixedIP-DSL, then swap to IHUG :pI can't, I'm in a contract I don't have the spare cash to break out of. Also I've been told that IHug routes some of it's international traffic via satellite - that kind of latency is unacceptable.

430399 2006-02-14 21:01:00 NO-IP Rob99 (151)
430400 2006-02-14 21:10:00 NO-IP

Yea with No-IP you don't need a static IP address.
I've been using No-IP at work for over a year now and never had a problem & it's FREE!

If so, the vast majority of people leave their modem on 24/7/365 so I don't see how it not having static IPs allows them to maximize their IP pool considering everyone connected needs an IP address and most people are connected the whole time. maccrazy (6741)

Most of the time it's just on 24/7, yet the address still changes. I do use NO-IP at the moment (and have done for the last 7 months) but I find it severely limiting. When trying to point an actual domain at it it just doesn't work. Erayd (23)

I'd say at least 50% of our UBS customers are not 24/7 connected users.

You've got to remember that the PC World forums are not representative of the population. The people here are likely to have a more technical focus.

But the average Ma and Pa user is vastly different.
