429732 2006-02-14 03:05:00 There are ISP's other than Telecom in the market. It doesn't just affect them.True.. that's why personally I am on one. However in a lot of locations DSL is the only game in town. Had I a choice I would have moved several of the offices I am responsable for off DSL some time ago.

Yes, but Telecom is the supplier of broadband to all most all the ISPs in NZ & Telecom is the one who sets the plans.

Even for the smaller ISPs I would of thought something like more users = more money = more money to pay for bandwidth/ Telecom fees etc.....

429734 2006-02-14 03:47:00 How would that work? What happens when your connection goes down, or Telecom screws your line etc etc.

Not very realistic unfortunately.Personally I would make a distinction between alerting Telecom there is a problem with their service and needing help using their service.

429735 2006-02-14 04:34:00 Just talked to Orcon, used 26GB last month on the 256k unlimited plan.

Dont remember doing anything too intensive.

Muhahahahahaha.

429737 2006-02-14 04:58:00 Personally I would make a distinction between alerting Telecom there is a problem with their service and needing help using their service. But you're not calling Telecom for that. You'd be calling the ISP providing you with UBS. UBS customers have no recourse with Telecom whatsoever.

How does one draw the line between a line fault or a router/computer configuration problem when most customers couldn't identify either.

It's just not practicable.

429738 2006-02-14 06:36:00 Just because you think it's too expensive doesn't mean it's unfairly priced .

I think a Lexus is too expensive but people happily pay for them .

The fact of the matter is that data (not broadband, not dialup, not cable) but any International data in New Zealand is FCKGWing expensive .

Read the thread and think about it . You want a 2Mb connection, you want to pay next to nothing for it, and you want to be able to max that pipe out at 2Mb any time you please .

So does everyone else .

The ISP has to provide that 2Mb pipe to the best of their ability, where it is costing them literally ~$1k per Mb for international transit .

It's just not realistic .

I don't think diamonds are worth $1000's, but people do and people pay for them . Live with it .

Your post is not only nieve and ignorant it it dangerous (sorry no way to sugar coat it)

Point 1 .
There is NO good reason at all for any broadband plan to have a 128K upload speed other than to protect themselves from VOIP being used in the average home, and that's a fact! . It does NOT cost them more to offer a 512K standard as there current network can do 1MB . If you can come up with another reason in there defence please post it!

Point 2 . Ihug can offer 40 gig and 80 caps at reasonable prices why can't Telecom?, especially as Telecom actually wholesale it to Ihug! .

Point 3 . The current Telecom ADSL network can handle up to 8MB (around 1KM from exchange) . There is no good reason not to boost speeds far more to keep up, especially with caps in place anyway .

Thankfully less and less people are thinking like your post, and are opening there eyes and realising we are getting shafted fairly badly by what is effectively a Monopoly .

Uhh...yeah it does...how do you figure increasing the upload speed to 512k would cost Telecom no more $$?

Why would it? No network upgrade required. There are data caps in place so no extra cost there either, simply really. Other Telco's around the world use nearly identical networks and offer higher upload speeds as a standard no problem.

However it might cost them big time on the phone side of things as people and businesses can readily use VOIP on 512K, which is the reason WHY we have 128K now as a standard (unless you pay the absorbent 512K up plans).

How do you know it doesnt cost more?? Do you own an ISP . Ninja works for one and by the sound of things is fairly high up there so I would take more heed from someone working in the industry than you any day .

Of course they would want to protect their business and if VOIP is a threat why would they not try to protect their investment . Would you not protest if they decided to build a prison next door to your house . Why because it would be a threat .

Ninja summed this up pretty well a while ago . Ihug are banking on more customer NOT leeching warez supporting those that do .

Can you drive your car faster and further without there being some sort of impact?

Thankfully only a few people I know actually give a **** about broadband and the internet . The rest manage well without which gives me the balance I need in my llife .
