429702 2006-02-13 21:20:00 In that tiny margin they need to buy the international transit, provide helpdesking, e-mail, spam and virus filtering, user homepage space, etc etc etc.I wonder if they have considered offering a service without all that stuff? Personally I have never used any of it so I wonder how many people actually have? maccrazy (6741)
429703 2006-02-13 21:22:00 I wonder if they have considered offering a service without all that stuff? Personally I have never used any of it so I wonder how many people actually have?Yeah but the infrastructure has to be there anyway for those that do want it. ninja (1671)
429704 2006-02-13 21:24:00 Come on Greg, all anyone wants is value for money, and none of those plans get even close, Its not even a matter of what people can afford but more what the product is worth.

And the product isn't worth any of those prices.C'mon Metla yourself. I can't find fault with the costs - can't you recall the cost of dial-up in the early 90's?

Man, you can't expect to get a Maserrati for the price of a Toyota. Anybody can get real cheap and reasonable reliability from a low bandwidth adsl plan. And you can get even cheaper and virtually unlimited dialup access for the cost of a six pack these days.

But 60 - 80 bucks per month for 10 gigs of damn fast Internet access is too much?

Or we could have them exterminated.

Hell yes.

429707 2006-02-13 21:40:00 Hell yes.

I agree with Metla here.

429708 2006-02-13 22:14:00 Some more on this:

Telecom's broadband cut 'overdue' (www.nzherald.co.nz)

UPDATE: No faster UBS leaves providers in lurch (computerworld.co.nz)

This time from the Govt:

Greens criticise Telecom's broadband move (home.nzcity.co.nz)

Govt says Telecom's broadband offer not enough (home.nzcity.co.nz)

PM may signal moves on broadband (tvnz.co.nz)

429709 2006-02-13 22:35:00 Yeah but the infrastructure has to be there anyway for those that do want it.Yes, you're right. However, if they offered some plans without access to the help desk, I'm sure lots of people would be interested in them (obviously not beginners) and thus they wouldn't need to employ and pay as many tech support staff. :) maccrazy (6741)
429710 2006-02-13 23:00:00 Um, should the Government regulate how your momma changes your nappies so that she gets the best possible value?

No. But they should if there was only one company that provided nappies here, and they were expensive while "holding" very little

C'mon, the industry HAS to have some free enterprise aspects to it or else it'd never progress - we'd still be chucking spears if it weren't for allowing common market sensibilities to have their input, and their profits, without totalitarian rule.

You seem to be very interested in business doing well and progress. Pray tell, why is it acceptable that Orcon lose Tens of thousands of dollars on telecom's DSL?

429711 2006-02-13 23:41:00 but when you see what people get overseas it's shocking.

Yes , $50 odd bucks gets you 10Mb both upload and download uncapped with static IP .
