688724 2008-07-17 01:02:00 The DFI got great reviews, wasn't on my list originally but it looked good. DeSade (984)
688725 2008-07-17 01:07:00 Actually, I just read a review on the board above. Despite its specs being drool worthy, it doesn't perform all that well.

Are you only getting the LANParty for it's SLI?

688726 2008-07-17 01:09:00 I've never been a fan of DFI boards.

Haven't got a real reason. They just seem gimmiky, and they don't have the same performance as the nice Asus boards.

You could get an uber nice Asus board for that price.

688727 2008-07-17 01:21:00 Well I respect the opinions here or I wouldn't be asking for advice.
I will check out the ASUS board more fully.

688728 2008-07-17 03:58:00 Thinking of upgrading to vista for more ram.
Can anyone give me a overview of the differences in the vista offerings
home/pro basic/premium etc

And you guys convinced me to change to the ASUS board
Thanks that is exactly why I started this thread for this kind of information.

688729 2008-07-17 04:06:00 You can probably find the info you want here en.wikipedia.org Agent_24 (57)
688730 2008-07-17 04:26:00 Don't bother with basic. Go for home premium.

If you go to ascent's motherboard page (www.ascent.co.nz) you can go through the search functions on the left.

If you want SLI on your board you'll definitely pay extra, but to see the SLI boards go to the "Chipset" drop down menu and select only the nVidia chipsets.

IMO, if you don't seriously plan on getting a second graphics card any time soon don't bother with SLI, it's not worth it. Also, most of the high end Motherboards are expensive because they include a lot of overclocking solutions. If you don't plan on overclocking, then I wouldn't spend this amount of money on a board.

You'll probably find a board around $200 would suit your tastes more if you don't plan on either of these things.

Although having a board called "Maximus Extreme" (www.ascent.co.nz) does add a fair amount of geek factor to your computer. Even if you don't use even a third of it's features.

688731 2008-07-17 04:33:00 "Maximus Extreme" (www.ascent.co.nz)

Holy Crap.

688732 2008-07-17 04:37:00 I like a lot of overhead, what I am not planning now I might want to do in 3 months.

With the new nvidia cards coming out the 9800GTX are dropping in price so picking up a 2nd one to SLI is certainly a possibility for me.

Nah the ASUS is a good choice I think
Now to decide if I want vista......
DeSade (984)
688733 2008-07-17 06:50:00 If you have the power then vista's not a problem.

The only problems come with developers not porting to it properly, so some games don't work as well as you'd expect.

Also DX10.1 is used by a grand total of pretty much nobody. Which is really annoying. So that's not so great a reason to go to it.

64bit is good in theory too, in practice there are a few more issues with compatibility than I'm happy with.
