688714 2008-07-15 20:19:00 I am leaning towards G-Skill branded ram.
CPU and Motherboard still undecided.
CPU Quad or Dual core? is Quad worth it at this point, is there enough software using it or will be using it within a year or so?

Also I still have a floppy drive on this machine, any suggestions what to put in that bay to replace it?

Intel Core 2 Duo 3.33GHz LGA775 #E8600

2GB Corsair (2x1Gb) DDR2-1066 DOMINATOR

Now I am only missing a cooler and something to fill the old floppy drive bay.
Suggestions?

Cooler? your CPU should come with one

You could fill it with a floppy drive :D (good for BIOS flashing!) or a USB memory card reader...

688717 2008-07-16 14:03:00 I have never used a stock cooler, not sure I could trust one.
Are they ok?

Never use the floppy drive and it looks out of place in my case, I am leaning towards a card reader but I can't see myself using that much either.

I've almost always used stock coolers and thermal interface material, and never had a problem when I did. Then again I don't overclock either (can't afford to blow anything up ) - if you're planning to do that then you probably should buy something better, and use higher quality TIM. Otherwise if you're just running at stock speeds I can't see the point in bothering

Can't think of much else you'd put in a floppy bay, other than a floppy drive, card reader or zip drive (more obsolete than floppy in my opinion) Maybe some kind of fan controller or LED/LCD for something. Or you could just leave it empty ;)

688719 2008-07-16 14:51:00 heh
Already have a fan controller in the other bay. Might as well stick a card reader in there, they are cheap enough.
Thanks for the info on the stock coolers that will save me some $$ aso for the TIM I usually use Arctic Silver.
Cant' be bothered overclocking, I agree with you there, not spending a grand on this stuff to destroy it.

688720 2008-07-16 15:14:00 I use Arctic Silver 5, unless the cooler already has something on it - which turns out a lot easier

Although I think there are actually better products than AS5 now anyway...

688721 2008-07-16 19:42:00 Didn't I see something about $1000 budget in the original post? JJJJJ (528)
688722 2008-07-16 20:15:00 This is a $1000 or just over.
$429 CPU
$449 Motherboard
$119 Ram
$27 Card Reader
=$1024

688723 2008-07-16 23:40:00 Don't worry about TIM, as the stock coolers come with wax on the bottom that melts as the CPU heats up. Stock coolers do fine if you're not planning to OC like Agent said.

You probably could OC on a stock HSF if you wanted, you just wouldn't get much.

As for the MoBo... I'd go with this (www.ascent.co.nz) over what you've got every time. It's cheaper, Asus is more reliable, it has better cooling, still has 3xPCI-Ex16. It's just way better in almost every way...
