Where did you her that?

430405 2006-02-14 22:08:00 Where did you hear that?Someone I know that should know about this, but I'm not sure if I believe it myself - hence me not stating the source. However I'd have to know for sure before taking the risk. Erayd (23)

However I'd have to know for sure before taking the risk. Before the southern cross cable this was the trick IHUG used to make flat rate internet connections for all a reality. However, now we got a groovy wee light pipe connecting NZ to the world, the satalites are largely redundant technology, however, i suspect it is put to use at times of high usage and so forth, simply because they can use it to keep things running at a reasonable rate.

Redundancy is good, even if slower. The SC cable could fail, in which case IHUG customers will really be laughing

430407 2006-02-15 05:05:00 Correct me if I am wrong, but your IP only changes when you disconnect or turn off your modem, correct? If so, the vast majority of people leave their modem on 24/7/365 so I don't see how it not having static IPs allows them to maximize their IP pool considering everyone connected needs an IP address and most people are connected the whole time.

There are times when the connection drops though, thus changing your IP

However, I get a free static IP on Orcon which is put to use

I think I can explain some of the ADSL users that aren't on 24/7.
For starters, all the intertnal modems will disconnect when you shut down your computer.
There are a lot of people out there that will go to great lengths to conserve power (and those that think everything computer related uses a lot of power) so they turn off their free modems whenever they aren't using the net.
