429067 2006-02-10 17:41:00 I was born in the South Island and grew up there. I've been everywhere there and only a few places in the North.

Why? Well I like the place, I like those wide streets with no traffic jams, I like the cool weather (and it doesn't snow there! There are no icebergs).
And houses are cheap compared to here.

Husband is convinced his a$$ will freeze to the loo...hehe, but we will have a nice fire...

We will most likely be stopping off in Oamaru, thats where my best friend lives. Well technically Ngapara really....
May have to stay there a few days while we wait for our new house to become vacant. Which I haven't even bought yet, going down tomorrow to view my shortlist.

Ah, we're homeless!!!

The natives are mostly friendlier but last time we were there we met a few Jafa haters who wouldn't talk to us because we were "one of them".

But yay, I finally escape this nightmare called Auckland!!! :D

429070 2006-02-10 20:45:00 Invers is cold. I visited afew years ago and it was hat and jacket and jeans and woolly socks and sneakers weather and it was beginning of Jan. Howevber, it is also sometimes bright and sunny and broad daylight and 8.30pm, seemed like the middle of the afternoon. This was in summer. In winter I think it's just dark for months. LOL

Another refugee from Jaffaville. We get them up here in the far north. Watch out for the ex-pats society, can stop you integrating. We get lots of refugees (some just weekend refugees) and they tend to stick together around the stainless steel barbie with the chardonay. A bit concerned about the ways of some of us yokels I think.

Anyway good luck with the move. Kings park (or is it Queens?) is brillaint. So are the public pools, great museum and art gallery. Yeah, wide streets. That's so they can tow the bergs back out to sea.

good luck. enjoy your posts.

429071 2006-02-10 20:56:00 Invercargill is a lovely town. I have stayed there several times and it is one of the few places in NZ I would like to live, if not in my present locale.

The only thing to watch out for is the increased UV light levels, so the slip slap slop motto is quite important, especially for children. It plays havoc with house paint too, I have observed, unless of course the canny Invercargillites don't believe in house maintenance.

Cheers

ChCh is getting really bad for traffic nowadays . It took me 35 mins to get home from Papanui Road at 3:30pm yesterday, a trip that normally takes just 10 mins . And it took me over 10 mins just to cross the road . Would have been quicker to walk 300m down to the traffic lights and back to cross .

Invers is cold . I visited afew years ago and it was hat and jacket and jeans and woolly socks and sneakers weather and it was beginning of Jan .
No different to ChCh .

What struck me the most about Invercargill when I was there year before last is how strong the wind was . Heck, did it blow!! Just outside of the town the bushes and few trees there were permanently bent in half facing northwards and it felt like the heavy 4WD was going to get picked up and flung across the sorry-looking paddocks at any moment .

I was also surprised that it is as flat as Canty down there, unlike Dunners .

Thanks to Beetle for all her helpful advice too .
What the heck does Beetle know about Invers? She's never been there . :D

Good luck with your move pctek, hope you enjoy your new home . :)

We are taking our pile of bricks with us - our BBQ. And the remaining ti-tree. No doubt husband will continue to stand around with his beer.
I don't like wine.
And the last thing I'd want to do is stand around talking about Auckland - with anyone. You forget - I was just temporarily trapped here. I'm going home... :D

It actually stays light at least an hour longer down here than up in Auckland . Quite often I'm watching the news & I see the reporters somewhere up north where it is getting very dark, but it is still bright & sunny down here in Invercargill .

It is Queens Park . We also Anderson Park that you should check out, and the Otepuni Gardens are a great place to stop off if you are walking along the flood banks (You can walk anywhere in Invercargill, and I prefer the flood banks to the streets) . Not many people visit the Otepuni Gardens even though they are right in town .

There is a display of photos of the Hump Ridge Track & surrounding area at the art gallary on now . My sister has been telling me to check it out, and I'll have to find time to do that .

Yeah, wide streets . That's so they can tow the bergs back out to sea .
 We don't drag them out, we drag them in just for you northerners :D

Yes so they can take home pictures of the penguins huddled on them and tell everyone not to come down, which suits me fine, I like it empty. Who wants crowds like Auckland.
