| 429762 | 2006-02-14 18:52:00 | Even with 512 upload, I put my larger reports onto CD/DVD and drop them off to the printers (lots of images folks) . I'm there and back before the blimmin things would get there . Tis a pity they havent found a way to send bound hard copies over the net yet, friggin Telescum holding back tecjnology once again :angry But how is that Telecom's fault that you have to put images that are yours on to a cd . Its not as if you didnt know that the upload speed was slow . How is saving you time and money their concern . Yes customer's should be the concern of all customers but no-one, and I mean no-one I know has to put their images onto cd's to take them to get printed . And even if they did - its called life . I dont doubt that long term you may not need to but until then big deal . Not that long ago a road I frequent to go the fishing spot was sealed to make it easier to get there . It is nice and saves me a bit more time but if they hadn't done it I would still go . The problem here with those that are not happy is they like to cloud it with saying it is good for the economy and all nz and we want the same as overseas but in reality, no one gives a **** about anyone else . Lets be honest . We want faster and higher cap broadband for ourselves . Do we really care if the neighbour cant afford it . Nope . Do we really care if Acme co . has to operate overseas . Nope . I want faster upload and bigger caps for me, so it can make my life better . Even Ms Preistly commented that some companies in the film industry had to go overseas . But why did they have to go overseas - to make a profit for their company . No other reason . Those that say big budget movies is good for the economy is full of crap . I didnt see any improvement in my life . Interest rates still went up, petrol prices still go up, electricity prices still go up, food still goes up . Where is the benefit? No one has yet to say how any of this whinging about bigger caps and faster downloads is going to make it better for me . I reckon pretty soon LLU will happen, not because it is deemed better but because they cant put up with the constant whining . I give up to my kids sometimes when they carry on like this lot . |

Sam that post was partly in jest, I'll put more emoticons in next time eh! But now that you have brought up some points, I'll attempt to answer them in a way that is easily understood, for me, this is going to take some considerable effort, so I hope you appreciate what this is costing me  ;) But how is that Telecom's fault that you have to put images that are yours on to a cd . It's not, I created them, I choose how they are sized, rendered and the format . Besides, I don't use Telecom, I'm on paradise cable  However, as the major player, Telecom sets nationwide standards, by defualt, so, it just seems a bit pointless, to be paying for something called Broadband, which is not the finished article when compared to other products called broaband overseas and what said products can be used for: i . e . Useful to me in a practical business sense, i . e . prodictive endeavour, . i . e . to allow me to service my customers better . Yes customer's should be the concern of all customers but no-one, and I mean no-one I know has to put their images onto cd's to take them to get printed . Hmmm!, very good point, I guess I could get the crayons out and hand render them  Ok, ok, just ragging ya, sure I could print them out at the office, collate and bind everything myself, I could also fogoe using couriers and deliver the results to my clients by bicycle, be abit awkward for the ones based overseas, but hey, the bicycle was once an efficient means of transport and still can be  The problem here with those that are not happy is they like to cloud it with saying it is good for the economy and all nz and we want the same as overseas but in reality, no one gives a **** about anyone else . Lets be honest . We want faster and higher cap broadband for ourselves . Nah! It's good for me because it is good for my clients, i . e . it's good for business . But, there is a threshold of affordability and practicality, and in terms of my business (as a sole practice), it ain't there yet . The economic efficiencies are being overstated, but efficienecies there are, dismissing them because you couldn't care less for online gamers or home snapshots, condems other users by the same rationale (BTW, although I don't game online, I don't begrudge those that do, wanting to do so with reasonable gameplay) . Tux, it doesn't matter whether the images go to Frogprint or PrintStop, are jpeg or in a pdf document, it's the act of uploading which restricts it's usefulness, though, I must admit, 512 is ahell of alot better than the 128 ADSL connection I was on up to a few months ago . Note: Flippin too many images in my post, how am I supposed to convey meaning without emoticons, eh! ****tards |

| 429765 | 2006-02-14 22:23:00 | I don't get why people are talking about bulk uploads as the major problem . To me it would be nice to be able to upload bulk data faster, but it is not what I want faster uploads for most . Realtime applications are what I want: Remote Desktop, Remote Assistance, Citrix Metaframe, Audio Conferencing, Video Conferencing, Online Gaming, Remotely hosted applications . All these things require a fair ammont of upload bandwidth, and low latency . All of the work very crappily on DSL, because of the low upload rates . Some of these are essential services for NZ (Landonline for instance uses citrix) . -Qyiet |

I especially noted the comment "With Telecom the devil is in the details" . . co . nz/news . nsf/news/28363DAAB75B1F61CC2571140028E35A" target="_blank">computerworld . co . nz |

| 429767 | 2006-02-15 04:10:00 | There seems to be a lot of debate over whether Telecom are providing services at a 'fair' price . As I see it (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), we don't know what a 'fair' price is . 'Fair' prices are generally arived at through the age old principle of supply-and-demand . I don't think this works when there is (effectively) only one supplier . There have been several comments here regarding market-forces, and I agree that this is what NZ needs . If Telecom feel that they are offering fair and reasonable prices (both retail and wholesale), then they should have nothing to fear if the network was un-bundled . . . Anyway, that's my 2 . 25c (incl GST) |

| 429768 | 2006-02-15 04:40:00 | Edward is right, you shouldn't be hosting a site on an ADSL connection. Both 128k and 512k are too slow. Perhaps if it was at 1Mbit upstream it would be ok for a very small site, but it isn't designed for that purpose. :) Actually, hosting is a good example of a service that is pretty much the same as far as value goes as broadband, with the major difference being you can escape local hosting fees by purchasing hosting on a server overseas. For my website, on a New Zealand based server would cost NZ$500 per month from Xtra (I can't tell what is included with their plans on their site, but I'm guessing it would be lacking essential services) or ~$120 from ihug per month. How much do you pay for overseas hosting? Approximately $50 per year depending on the host. Is it exactly the same? Yes, probably better. That doesn't mean you need to buy from a host run from outside New Zealand, just one that has the brains to put their servers outside New Zealand. :2cents: That's kind of the issue behind all this. ;) Heh, I've run a webserver off my 128k up connection before, and it was reasonably quick (Then again, it was imageless, and the CSS file was on an american server :D) |

| 429769 | 2006-02-15 04:59:00 | Heh, I've run a webserver off my 128k up connection before, and it was reasonably quick (Then again, it was imageless, and the CSS file was on an american server )I think the key to the situation is the stuff in the brackets. ;) An image intensive site, or a site getting 100+ visitors per day would absolutely kill a 128k connection. There is a reason webservers are on 10Mbps and 100Mbps connections. :p | maccrazy (6741) | ||
| 429770 | 2006-02-15 05:12:00 | There is a reason webservers are on 10Mbps and 100Mbps connections. :p Dunno about that. Taking a look at the ads on the Gentoo site shows co-location offerings with connections at T1 seeds (1.5mbit/s). |

| 429771 | 2006-02-15 05:25:00 | It's simple bloody arithmetic . What are you arguing about? If you get a few connections a day and send only "simple" HTML text, you can run a web site on a 56k modem . There's one website which runs on an 8-pin Microchip processor, and connects through a 2400 baud serial line . Trademe do a bit more than that and they are connected directly to the backbone . I would love to see what Google's connection is like . |
