429752 2006-02-14 10:55:00 That doesn't make it value for money.Neither is the cost of petrol. Greg (193)
429753 2006-02-14 12:29:00 yes greg, but there also isnt one petrol company in new zealand, that can set the petrol price at whatever they want. competition in the market place is better for consumers, imagine if bellsouth hadnt set up in opposition to telecom, wed still have to top up our prepaid cellphones at $30 a month, talk at $3 upwards a minute. competition also compells companies to provide a better standard of service, better options and services. remember when telstra clear introduced cable to wellington and christchurch? fast, cheaper internet, cheaper tolls, all independant of telecom. imagine if that could happen now, downloads at over 8mbitps uploads at 1mbitps, download caps at 20gb+ at the starting rate, being $30-40 dollars. its not dreaming, its reality. and high data cap users arent just warez and piraters, as mentioned before, film companies having to fly rolls of film to the states because our internet was so slow, have you ever tried uploading 100mb's plus to an online print shop? its painful. in reality, if we had higher speeds we could have streaming movies like the states, more efficient businesses. but at speeds that are a genuine price. oh and the comment that its costing telecom $1k per mb is downright ludicrous. if its costing them $1k per mb, then why arent we buying telecom's assets at an liquidators auction house? telecom is alive, and its kicking. 429754 2006-02-14 12:36:00 So, because we get reemed by the OPEC, it's ok to get reemed elsewhere . Trying the nappy analogy on, in a different guise, doesn't make it it any less flawed .

The problem is, this discussion, in general, is it's full of half truths, inconsistencies and downright fallacious BS .

Yeah sure, it's nice to get higher speeds, even if the upload is crap, the caps more than pathetic, buts it's a step in the right direction, right!

Wrong, and anyone who can't acknowledge that, is either easily satisified (= a bit dim, or has simple internet needs), which is their perogative, or have taken in the ploy as something realy meaningful in NZ's telecoms developement (wanna buy a car buddy), it ain't, it's patently and simply another stop gap measure by Telecom to buy time and, hopefully on their part, swing things back their way . There's no biggy in that behaviour, they're a busines after all, except for the fact that they happen to have a monopoly, which does make it a big deal, because the whole rationale of this move is to preserve their monopoly at virtually whatever cost (probably yours) .

It's the lines and provision of the technology monopoly, that is the real issue . Arguing over price and data caps is only a symptom of that fact . It is also that monopoly, that perpetrates the risible situation re number portabilty, the differential that businesses bled for product/services that were, in effect, no different to residential services (now shifted to high cost of upgrade to, only average at best, uplood speed) .

The powers that be should show some balls (Helen) . Split off the lines business, use some formula for all service providers to share in it's upkeep and let everyone compete on a level playing field . If product and the value of same does not improve, then I'll shut my gob . In the meantime, I'll farking well whinge and whine and be a bitter **** and no mealy-mouthed apologist is going to make a damn bit of difference to that, because in the scheme of things they are ignorant of and irrelevant to the issues, IMO .

Furthermore, if you read all that, your sanity is in question .

429760 2006-02-14 13:04:00 ,<snip> have you ever tried uploading 100mb's plus to an online print shop?

Even with 512 upload, I put my larger reports onto CD/DVD and drop them off to the printers (lots of images folks) . I'm there and back before the blimmin things would get there .

Tis a pity they havent found a way to send bound hard copies over the net yet, friggin Telescum holding back tecjnology once again :angry
