688683 2008-07-14 06:03:00 I am planning on buying an External hard drive for data backup.

What is the current best hard drive in terms of quality.

I was gonna get Seagate FreeAgent ones but after reading reviews on Amazon it appears even with 5 year warranty these hard drives crash n die with power supply failures within weeks / months.

Anybody has experiences with Seagate external hard drives? I know they are quality hard drives but maybe these free agent ones are crap

what other brands are reliable. i am looking at 500GB or 1TB one.

Cheers

688684 2008-07-14 06:05:00 I have had nothing but good experiences with FreeAgents, I'd still recommend building your own, but the Western Digital MyBook drives are good too. wratterus (105)
688685 2008-07-14 06:13:00 I have a Free Agent 250gig USB drive - so far excellent.
The Power pack is an ordinary adaptor, no probs there.

Seagate do make the best drives.
However.
External enclosures all use basically the same power. All of them are a bit dodgy. It's not the drive, its the power supplies. I don't mean specifically the ones the Freeagent enclosure has, I mean all of them. Its the nature of the power supply....

Buy them both separately.
Get the HDD then buy the best enclosure you can find.

I have one, so far its fine, did have a similar thing happen to my previous one though.
Which is why I have all my important data backed up on 3 separate Seagate HDDs, only 1 of which is in an enclosure.

688689 2008-07-14 09:13:00 Seagate FreeAgents are the best. I have a 250GB one and haven't had any problems at all and the Memeo backup program is fantastic. beeswax34 (63)

Same here. No problems. I back up every night to the Seagate, and then every couple of weeks back up to another external that has a separate power supply.
