430511 2006-02-15 00:57:00 There are many images on the telly of sports competitors and others with their hand/clenched fist over their "hearts." Why? Just because the Yanks do it? Are these people as ignorant as the Yanks? It seems that way. I certainly would not want any of these people performing CPR on myself or any of my loved ones - they would die despite best intentions. I can only think that the Yanks are physically different from the rest of mankind and many mindless people are following their bad example yet again. I don't know about you, but my heart is in the centre of my chest - albiet ever so slightly to the left - behind a bone called the sternum. Does nobody learn CPR these days?

430512 2006-02-15 01:11:00 Possibly the same reason that men put their hands over their 'privates'. It's not where the brain is... it's where the pain is ;) Shortcircuit (1666)

What the hell has a sports person holding their hand over their chest ( I am assuming you are talking about during their national anthem) and CPR got to do with anything?? Are you saying that they actually think the heart is there?
I would say the action is more symbolic - and if you actually think about the action. It is not comfortable to put your hand on the middle of your chest. It just seems to rest better on the left side.

Having done many first aid courses it is always funny to see CPR performed on a TV programme and how wrong they get it. I understand that doing CPR on a person who doesnt need it is dangerous which can explain it, but I wonder if they should have some sort of disclaimer text to say this IS NOT how it is actually done.

Hopefully most people can distinguish between fiction and reality (or am I hoping in vain?)
