429652 2006-02-12 20:20:00 So Telecom is trying to play its trump card eh.

Telecom to offer 3.5/512 to ISPs? (computerworld.co.nz)

The cruel joke is the option of 3.5 Mbits/s but with only 128kbit/s upstream.

It costs an extra $25 to increase the upstream rate. They are obsessed with these piddly upstream rates... :yuck:

The proposal needs to be rejected.

429653 2006-02-12 21:24:00 Another attempt by Telecom to stave off local loop unbundling. Greedy bastards, they've been holding back 3.2/512Mbps as a bribe and we may well have never seen connections of this speed so soon if Telecom had successfully met the govt's broadband sign-up targets  xmojo1 (4630)
429654 2006-02-12 22:07:00 It's fantastic! I'm gonna get 1.5 times my download speed, and 4 times my upload speed, at no extra cost. It's awesome as far as I'm concerned. I simply couldn't ask for more. :) Greg (193)
429655 2006-02-12 22:24:00 Do I detect a note of sarcasm Greg? I certainly hope so, the whole thing is a cynical sop, that will hold broadband and telecoms in this country back for years to come, if the other ISP's go weak at the knees (which there is every possibility of happening). Murray P (44)
429656 2006-02-12 22:25:00 XTRA TO LAUNCH FASTER BROADBAND AND LOWER PRICES
13 February 2006

Broadband is about to get faster for residential customers – and a lot cheaper for business customers .

Telecom’s ISP Xtra is to launch new speeds and pricing on broadband services for both business and residential customers .

All existing residential customers will be automatically upgraded to faster plans at no cost .

The new plan line-up includes download speeds of up to 3 . 5 Megabits per second (Mbps) and three new services that offer an increased upload speed of 512 Kilobits per second (Kbps) .

Existing residential plans will have their download speeds increased to maximum possible speeds of either 2 or 3 . 5 Mbps . Xtra will be progressively upgrading all current customers to the faster specifications for no change of price - and some plans will move to a lower price .

Telecom’s GM Wired Division Matt Crockett said the new plans would be launched in early April .

“Both residential and business customers will find the plans provide a great range of affordable broadband choices designed to cover the varying needs of internet users .

“The three new Xtra Pro plans in particular will be very attractive to small businesses and customers at home who require higher speeds in both directions as well as larger data amounts each month,” Mr Crockett said .

A new entry level plan will also be introduced, and priced from $29 . 95 it will provide ‘a dollar a day broadband’ for people who want a basic broadband service .

“We want to attract new-to-broadband and new-to-internet customers – and this new Xtra Basic plan will help do that,” Mr Crockett said .

The simplified broadband line-up will offer the same prices for both business and residential customers . This will mean a big price drop for business customers, and follows the December determination from the Commerce Commission on the unbundled Bitstream Service (UBS) and the subsequent commercial agreement between Telecom and TelstraClear .

The new services will be available to customers from early April with existing customers receiving the upgraded speeds progressively from that month on .

The new speeds will be available to other ISPs on a wholesale basis on the same day .

429657 2006-02-12 22:29:00 Do I detect a note of sarcasim Greg?Nah don't be daft... as I mentioned in another forum, I'm as happy as a pig in ****. I'm genuinely thrilled. Greg (193)
429658 2006-02-12 22:39:00 I'm pleased for you. A better deal would 2Mb down, 512Mb up on a 5GB cap would it not? Murray P (44)
429659 2006-02-12 22:40:00 I'm pleased for you. A better deal would 2Mb down, 512Mb up on a 5GB cap would it not?Nope - Even better is what I'm actually going to get - 3.5Mb down, 512 Kb up, 10 gig cap, no extra cost. Greg (193)
429660 2006-02-12 22:50:00 $149.95

Is that the one? If so, it's a ripoff Greg. If I double the cost of my plan to bring the cap into line (5GB upto 10GB), it's still $40-50 less than that / month.
