689640 2008-07-17 02:59:00 I am thinking of upgrading my home built socket 478 P4 machine to a Pentium core 2 duo .

MY main motivation is to get more RAM than the 1 gb that my current mobo supports so that I can install between 2 and 4 gb ram get better performance from photoshop and msaccess .

My question is this . If I get a socket 775 mobo, will it accept the P4 processor that I have in my current socket 478 machine?

Logic suggests that the answer is no, but the spec's say that it can run a p4 processor . see
. asus . com/products . aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1311&l1=3&l2=11&l3=0&l4=0" target="_blank">www . asus . com

I don't want to buy a new cpu unless I have to so it would be great to be able to use the existing one .

regards

Help would be appreciated

775 is P4, but its not 478 pin

689642 2008-07-17 03:12:00 Simple answer is NO ! a Socket 478 CPU will not fit in a Socket 775 Board.

Here is a socket 478 (www.imagef1.net.nz) and here is 775 (www.imagef1.net.nz) as you can see totally different.

Many thanks

689644 2008-07-17 04:25:00 With Motherboard upgrades you generally have to do board, CPU and RAM in one go. pctek (84)
