689499 2008-07-16 11:15:00 Hoping some-one can help me here...

I thought I would have a go at trying Ubuntu. I installed it after creating a new partition, but then decided it wasn't for me.

(This is the stupid bit)

I couldn't see an uninstall option anywhere, so next time I was in XP, I deleted that partition.

Now, when I boot up I get a grub error 22.

Any ideas?

689500 2008-07-16 11:36:00 These guys have the same problem as you:

FIX:

Just for future reference: SystemRescueCD did the trick. I used the GParted that comes with it, and simply re-did the old partition scheme (the one I had been trying to delete before). Then I installed Linux again, and Grub was back to normal.

Of course I still don't have what I desired (which was a Windows only machine), but I guess I have Ubuntu to blame for that as it insists on installing Grub to an annoying place where Windows can't get to afterwards.

689501 2008-07-16 11:59:00 Cheers,

Remind me to get in touch with you next time I'm in Auckland. A few pints at the Sheakespeares Tavern with you should be worth it.

689503 2008-07-16 21:12:00 Seems several people have had that problem, if the above doesn't fix it, I found a bit deeper in those links this as well -
Boot into the recovery console and use this command.
expand d:\i386\winlogon.ex_ c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe

D: = drive Xp cd is in
C: = drive Xp is installed on

To fix the bootloader in Win XP
1. boot with the install disk.
2. Choose the repair option.
3. select the default windows (if you have only 1 OS )
4 type in "fixboot" (without the " ") and hit enter
5. type in "fixmbr" (and hit enter)
6.type in exit
7.remove the cd and re-boot into windows. :)

(only quoted coz it saved all that typing :p)

I don't think any OS has an un-install option does it?

GRUB has two main parts:

The boot loader in the master boot record
A plain text configuration file that allows the user to select what OS to boot - this is in the Linux partition where is really needs to be

So when you delete the Linux partitions you delete this portion of GRUB which leaves the OSs un-bootable and hence the original boot loader needs to be re-loaded.
