689296 2008-07-16 01:39:00 What's everyone using for a firewall these days?

Preferably free...

Just realised I probably need an update or two.

:thanks

I think it's safe to say that if someone is asking for a firewall, they want a 3rd party one. ;)

And Jams, that's pretty harsh! I myself am often too lazy to do research before creating a thread. Who really cares? :p

689302 2008-07-16 03:29:00 I use ZA Pro V4. pctek (84)
689303 2008-07-16 03:49:00 Comodo was crappy last time i tried it :(

the old sygate is still ok. most of the older free fiewalls won't stand up to modern attacks and i see a lot of companies hide the fact they have a free one which is no longer updated.
havn't tried sunbelt free firewall.

zonealarm is still the best pick. pity about the bloated file size tho :(

What did you find crappy about Comodo? I have to admit, I don't use it myself, I use Eset Smart Security, but I've set it up and configured it enough, it seems to work really well, and it's easy to understand.

I can't stand ZA. :D

just trying comodo at the moment. at present it gets the big thumbs down
because it hides known applications (ie lets them through but dosn't display so you can't stop their access) and it dosn't display alerts when that process isn't running (ie if run a game in full screen the alert can't be seen and the alert vanishes when you exit the game!).

also it dosn't display applications that have tried to access the net. so you can be infected and it won't show that somethings trying to gain access. (eg exiting the game it looks like that game dosn't access the net).

very poor

as you can see its been a while. if i remember right it wasn't very user friendly either. all that may have changed.
