well, can you play any sounds at all? for example, when you boot, do you hear that stupid windows welcome sound?

are you using the original drivers for your audio? i.e., The ones from the motherboard disc, not the interent?

and, have you re-installed media player? (Setup file is in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\setup_wm.exe)

and when you go into the properties of the device manager, what mixers are there?

you might want to dxdiag, and make sure everythings working fine in there too~

forums.microsoft.com
thats for a different device, but describes the same problems. good luck.

689242 2008-07-15 22:17:00 Yes, system sounds work fine, also sound test in dxdiag.

Have updated all mobo drivers from the VIA site.

Had problem with WMP9, have updated to latest WMP11

When you refer to mixers in device manager, I assume you mean items under sound vidio & game devices.

Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Vidio Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
Vidio Codecs
Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver(WDM)

In dxdiag under DirectX Files, notes, the file quartz.dll is missing

When you try to use the media player to play anything, it comes up with "Windows Media Player encountered a problem when playing the flie. for additional assistance click web page"
If you click on Web Help, the page that comes up starts with "You've encountered error message C00D11B1" then suggests it has a sound card or driver related problem

Try installing a good codec pack, this can quite often fix the problem immediately - here's a fairly complete one (www.free-codecs.com) with almost all the codecs you'd ever need.
I'd go for the 3.1.1.7 - the 4 is still 4.0.0.0, best to wait a bit for that one.
I never use a x.0.0 of anything LOL

689244 2008-07-16 06:07:00 I had wondered about that, but most systems will play an audio cd with only a basic win install. This wouldn't even look at any type of audio file. It's sort of like what you'd expect to happen if you had the modem selected as the sound device.
The system has gone back to the owner now.
I can get it back if I can find a solution.
I googled the "quartz.dll is missing" & it would appear to be associated with the media player.
I also noticed one of the rear onboard USB ports has been hot enough to warp the flat contact thingy & can't be used now. Wondered if that may have contributed to the problem.

689245 2008-07-17 21:49:00 This problem is still unresolved.
Will have access to the system again next week.
All sugestions have been taken onboard & any further help would be appreciated.

689247 2008-07-21 01:50:00 OK I've got this system back.
Have tryed a few sugested fixes with no success.
Made a error in my original description of the problem, it does play with winamp but not WMP.
I have googled this problem "missing quartz.dll" it seems to be a known problem associated with WMP.
As I said I have tryed some of the sugested fixes & had no luck.

689248 2008-07-21 02:04:00 I think it belongs to Directx not WMP.

Reinstall or update DirectX

689249 2008-07-21 02:29:00 I've reinstalled directx several times but the file remains missing.
Directx dosent appear to install correctly.
I says it has but hasent taken the usual time to do so.
