432627 2006-02-21 23:24:00 Oh get over it.
NZ is a small long country with lots of rugged land and a few scattered people.

Most countries being compared to have millions and millions crammed into a small area.
It will cost Telecom a LOT to change the infrastructure and no-one else is interested in helping. They just bleat at Telecom and want to use it.

Like any other company they want to make a profit.

Move overseas if you don't like it.

I agree. Australia has vast mineral wealth for a start.. so of course they are ahead. Please all move, so I can buy a house for cheaper :D

432629 2006-02-21 23:44:00 It could just as easily be argued that it is the effects and implementation of New Right policies introduced in 1984 by Douglas, then reinforced and extended by the Richardson - Bolger -Shipley policies of National, and generally continued by the present government that has caused NZ to slip back so far.

It is instructive to consider that the average wage has not moved from about $30,000 for the last 15 years or more.

But during this time, the top end salaries have grown obscenely, which implies the typical low end wage has actually gone down.

Says Phil Reilly in that article:
"He saw improving workforce productivity as being a key to improving New Zealand's ranking and was pleased the Government was looking at initiatives for this.
But more work was needed to improve flexibility in labour markets. "

That is typical management/right wing clap trap that I've been hearing for the last 50 years :)

Interpreting: "workforce productivity" = make the buggers work harder for the same rate of pay, whilst management and CEO's pay themselves a wage rise.

"improve flexibility" = make the buggers work the hours we dictate, hire and fire without redress, do away with redundancy entitlements, cut holiday entitlements, make them re-apply for their jobs.

Now sits back and waits for Ciceros' response :)

I don't always agree with you Terry but there is merit in your cynicism. I too have wondered at the salary rewards enjoyed by some people. There appears to be a decoupling in the normal link between ordinary employees wages and managers wages. The latter grows and the former lags.

Mind you, this is led by the US where the gaps are very extreme. We only follow where others lead.

More productivity these days means working smarter rather than harder. For example, farmers use science and computer records to find and breed from their best stock. As opposed to pure stockmanship guessing which are the best animals. Similarly new grasses are identified and planted. I know a farmer who analyses the excrement from his cows to discover what feed is the most efficent.

Ultimately Pctek is correct - we are small and one of the most remote countries in the world. Why would anyone buy anything from NZ?

However, I am lucky my skills set improvements have risen my salary by 8% p . a . for the last 20 years . You can not sit in the same job and expect your salary to increase, you need to improve your value to business all the time .

Exactly - Increasing the volume of the bleating does not improve one's lot, only making yourself of value (economic or otherwise) will do it .

Education is the key that seems to always be left out (or not addressed properly) . When we have a greater appreciation of the value of education we may move forward instead of being dragged down by those that dont .

Mind you, we also have one of the most rigorous "Resource Management" systems in the world that makes economic progress a ponderous and expensive process . Some would say that we are trading off our ecomonic progress for a greener and more friendly environment . That we have a healthy environment in comparison to most other countries comes at a cost - you cant have it both ways
