431266 2006-02-19 22:24:00 Metla, without wanting to trawl over painful issues, is there anything you could share with people who might be interested in setting up a small computing business?

What was it that killed it for you?
What would you change if you had the chance?
Whats the traps for new players?

Its a sad situation but there is always something to learn from it.

431267 2006-02-19 22:43:00 Have a look further up the thread. And also Billy T's thread about WFTW Queastery.

Just in the spirit of helpfulness I would say with a start up business one thing you don't want to be doing is spending too much time at a forum like this helping people out for free. Fine spirit, but not conducive to business (as defined by andrew93.) :2cents:

hmm...Thought I had pretty much covered it, but in a nutshell I didn't charge enough and had time wasted on matters that don't make enough money....which means retail. The margins on hardware are so slim that by the time you spend 15 minutes discussing the item someone "may" be after you have lost money.

Anyhow, I may have a cunning plan to kick the old girl into life, all is not yet lost.

No work was ever delayed by my posting here, I have three stations set up for fixing rigs, my day is spent darting between all three and the laptop I surf the net with . A sip of coffee, read a couple threads, fire off a reply and still planty of time untill I have to look back at the rigs under repair .

And as of just now, Its lunch time, more coffee, a bit of posting . . . . Then I'll attack the laptop in for a service and then shoot off to this arvo's networking job .

And just to blow my own trumpet, I can fix a broken comp pretty quickly, Jobs are in and out smartly . Servicing can take a little longer due to the need to go over the system a few times, but still no drama, Just remove everything thats red-flagged, either with my suite of tools or manually .

Blowing my trumpet in my own thread about the stench of failure.

431271 2006-02-19 23:07:00 Well then you should prosper. Rent too much? Try a garage. Bills got sent out? Followed up? Essentially did the office operate as well as the workshop?

Friend of mine's got a one person marine elec. business and he's very good at his trade but the office was a mess (as happens with lots of sole traders) until the wife whipped it into shape.

It's gotta work. Crucify the overheads.

PS pleased to hear your helpful and often entertaining posts here are not part of the prob. :D

431272 2006-02-19 23:16:00 In the process of it as of today, the company is being shifted to a location that will serve as nothing more then a place to fix comps, and Im going to try and pick up as many business clients as I can (uh, anyone who knows the good oil on target marketing can chime in anytime they like) . And no, the office is a travesty compared to the workshop

Though, Having said that, The line of work is a tight line, as evident by the amount that disappear, The fact it "should work" doesn't mean it does . Weigh up the cost of getting 4 year old comp repaired aginst just ticking up another for no depoisit, no interest .

Anyhow, Guess I shall just have to start charging like a wounded bull, Taking shortcuts, useing old dodgy used parts . . . . Seems to work for everybody else .
