689860 2008-07-18 11:28:00 The easiest way to do this is with the "Restore previous folder windows at logon" option - but that happens with any folder, not one specific one, and only when it's left open and the computer is shut down.

For a specific folder to open, I don't think there is an option. The easiest way to do that would be to create a startup entry somewhere linking to the folder.

If any such startup entry exists on your PC then using hijackthis would be a quick way to find it. Or you could use a program that I like, called "Autoruns" by Sysinternals

689861 2008-07-18 11:33:00 Also look in the reg files, click the start orb, in search type in regedit, from the results double click regedit, navigate to

HKey_Local_Machine\Software\microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

Have a look and see if its there, or take a screen shot of the run items and we can advise.

WARNING:

DO NOT go altering any reg keys without the proper advice, if you do the PC may be affected, and cause damage to the Running of it.

689862 2008-07-18 12:01:00 I think it's running XP Pro, not Vista.... Just go start -> run or winkey+R and type regedit Agent_24 (57)
689863 2008-07-20 01:39:00 Haven't had time to pursue this very much so far but would still like to sort it out. I didn't mention that the Bin folder appears to be displayed on a Windows Explorer page.

Agent 24 - where is the "Restore previous folder at logon" button? Couldn't find it in a quick search - it is not on the Folder Options page. Will look up the Autoruns suggestion.

Wianuitech - I checked out the HKEY you suggested, down to Run, which expands to Optional Components with 3 options - Imail, MAPI and MSFS. Each of these has the 2 ?files - abDefault Reg_sz and abInstalled Reg_sz; MAPI also has
NoChange Reg_sz.

I intend to investigate the components loaded under msconfig.

It's probably unchecked already, and I doubt it would help your problem but if you want to know where it is, that's where.

My mistake before in an earlier post, working to much with vista on start button - etc, But the Reg directory is right , if anything was there it may have been in the "Run" folder - not the subs you listed, or maybe even " Run Once"

689866 2008-07-21 01:15:00 I have fixed the problem (for the time being at least) by doing a system restore.
I am sure that a setting somewhere had been changed somehow and would have liked to track it down and reset it and been confident of a permanent fix. It may not recur but will just have to wait and see.

Agent - I obviously missed that setting option when I looked for it.

Many thanks to all for the interest and suggestions.

689867 2008-09-27 10:52:00 The problem came back about a week ago!

I have just downloaded and run Autoruns - can't spot anything suspicious there, but what should I be looking for? The folder that is displayed in Win Explorer at startup is C:\Program Files\Common\Bin. Note that it is a subfolder of Common, not Common Files (which is also present), and it is the only one in Common. Autoruns shows no entries involving ...Common ... but several involving Common Files.
The Autoruns report is 14 pages long so not feasible to include it, and I am guessing that in this situation it is more informative than HJT (which I have never had cause to use).

I found the method for making Explorer start with a folder displayed (it involves appending the folder path to the entry in the Target box of Win Explorer properties), but there is no such entry on the compromised laptop.

So - any more suggestions, folks.

TIA

Explorer window opens at logon in directory \program files\common\bin - Windvd issue

If you change WINDVD 4 installation directory from default C:\Program Files\InterVideo\WinDVD4 to a sub-directory of C:\Program Files\ (i.e. C:\Program Files\WinDVD4) you may have one or several instances of Windows Explorer which open at logon, in directory C:\Program Files\Common\Bin.

This is because WinnDVD 4 installation (I have not checked for other versions) creates a directory C:\Program Files\InterVideo\Common. If you change installation directory as per example above, then the common\ and common\bin\ directories are created in C:\Program Files\
Then you have in program files C:\Program Files\Common Files\ and C:\Program Files\Common\.

This creates a mess when Windows launches the applications listed in the registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run or HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run if any of these applications are located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\
This occurs for example for Norton Firewall which creates a Key SSC_UserPrompt = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\UsrPrmpt.exe

There are two workarounds :
1 - Completely uninstall Windvd 4 and reinstall to default directory
2 - Replace \Program Files\ with \Common~1\ in registry keys values i.e SSC_UserPrompt = C:\Program Files\Common~1\Symantec Shared\Security Center\UsrPrmpt.exe

As a matter of fact Explorer Opens in C:\Program Files\Common\ directory because it fails to find the application. Using Common~1 solves the problem.
However, my suggestion is to use workaround 1 !
