689250 2008-07-21 02:38:00 Under sounds and audio devices / audio tab is the soundcard the default device?

Since it looks like you've got a voicemodem?

Which maybe the default audio device.

Which (if the modem is the default audio device), it wont work

689251 2008-07-21 02:49:00 Yes the sound car is the default device have even removed the modem in case it was causing a problem. Driftwood (5551)
689252 2008-07-21 03:16:00 Is there no quartz.dll in these locations?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

and

C:\WINDOWS\system32\

you could try manualy placing the file in both those locations and see if that works

Here is the quartz.dll file (www.dlldump.com) if you want to try that

689253 2008-07-21 03:45:00 Have just done that & it cured the problem in dxdiag. The system didn't like it though & asked me to insert the SP3 disk to restore the original configuration.
You also suggested putting a copy in the "dllcache" well this system dosent have one of those.
Anyway it still hasent cured the problem.

689254 2008-07-21 03:54:00 You have to untick hide protected operating system files to see the dllcache folder. In my computer / tools / folder options / view

The version if you have SP3 should be 6.5.2600.5596

Is KB951698 installed? If it isnt go to the MS site, download it then install it
Speedy Gonzales (78)
689255 2008-07-21 04:12:00 Have unhid the protected operating system files & there is no dllcache.
No, KB915698 is not installed, should it be?
Driftwood (5551)
689256 2008-07-21 04:16:00 I wouldnt have said it otherwise. It's 951968 not 915698

Its here (www.microsoft.com)

dllcache is in system32 folder. Did you look here?
Speedy Gonzales (78)
689257 2008-07-21 04:20:00 ALL SYS, DLL, EXE, and OCX files that ship on the Windows XP CD are protected. True Type fonts--Micross.ttf, Tahoma.ttf, and Tahomabd.ttf - are also protected. They are all "backed up" to a special folder called dllcache. The location of this file is:

%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\dllcache

The dllcache folder is extremely important so Windows XP hides it from you! To view it go to: My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > "uncheck" Hide protected operating system files. This will also reveal other hidden system files so be careful! e.g. pagefile.sys

Dont know where yours is then....
