1357771 2006-02-21 23:21:00 Last attempt is the freezer trick which I'm trying shortly.

You know thats complete rot on modern drives.

Happy birthday anyway....

1357772 2006-02-21 23:38:00 my primary master hard drive had failed without any warnings . Tried everything to get the data off it, but nothing works . Last attempt is the freezer trick which I'm trying shortly .

Yeah, and as Murphy's Law predicts, was planning a big backup of that drive but hadn't gotten around it to . :(

Good reminder never to be complacent about backups . Don't blame Murphy - blame Linux . WinXP is quite a forgiveable OS :D

Yes, I forgive you for using Windows XP . . .

Of course you are more likely to recover data using Linux than WinXP .

More hard drive's fail that are running XP than Linux :p :p :p

1357775 2006-02-22 03:19:00 HB Jen. Must admit I laughed a bit about yr hard drive -though you have my sympathies. But I thought that was so geeky. This huge disaster that happened on yr birthday. I was thinking some family tragedy or someone just got fired or what.

Anyway sorry to hear about all your lost data and be interested to hear the results of the freezer trick which the experts say does work and doesn't work. That's the appeal of computers for many I suspect. :D

Cheers, have a nice evening - meal, flash restaurant, or at home with the dearest and an outrageously exp bottle of wine.

1357776 2006-02-22 04:02:00 "The “Freeze It’ Myth

When a drive won't spin, some have recommended putting the drive in the freezer

The problem: The drive won't spin or there's a circuit board problem. The idea behind unsticking a drive with heat or cold is that the contraction or expansion of components inside a drive will knock the heads loose form the media so the drive can spin. While they've been known to work once in a while, they've been known to destroy the drive as well. Heating can destroy any number of components on and in the drive. A freezer can cause moisture to condense on the platters inside, rendering them further damaged."

And now I see the next myth is apparently the type of O/S you use causes damage.

1357777 2006-02-22 04:25:00 Well the freezer trick didn't work anyway, the drive is truely dead . Maxtor, only 3 years old too .

Had to install Mepis on a spare drive to tide me over until Fedora Core 5 is released in 3 weeks . If only the drive could of held out till then when I was planning to upgrade my master drive .

Making myself write out 100 times, I must back up my drive, I must back up my drive, I must back up my drive, I must back up my drive, I must back up my drive, I must back up my drive, I must back up my drive, I must back up my drive, I must back up my drive, I must back up my drive, I must back up II must back up my drive, I must back up my drive, must back up my drive, I must back up my drive, my drive, I must back up my drive . . .

Looking forward to some wine with my dinner tonight :D

1357778 2006-02-22 04:31:00 HB Jen,
The only thing the freezer will do is cause condesation, but you knew that anyway didn't you ;)
