690454 2008-07-20 06:59:00 I am having fun and games with the laptop and have spent half of last night and all of today working on it!

Somehow, it got a virus and wiped out the wireless connection and then the touch pad mouse wouldn't work and kept freezing up on me. I did a system restore and managed to get the anti virus going, but then it couldn't update the database and crashed.

After several restarts and glasses of wine, I have managed to start it in safe mode and transferred my other antivirus program with updates onto the laptop via a flash drive, so it will take a good while to run that.

I will be very sad to lose it if it dies completely! Fortunately I have most of the things on it as copies on the desktop. Oh well, it has been pouring with rain all day so it was a good day to stay inside and try to fix it. Got my fingers crossed that it will revive itself!

Anything else I can do?

690455 2008-07-20 07:06:00 Run HiJackThis - and get Speedy to have a look at the log. The info to get this is at the bottom of his posts. R.M. (561)

690458 2008-07-20 10:16:00 No use just running antivirus. It will be spyware.
Run HJT - that kills the stuff running in the background so that you can then remove the rest with the rest of the antimalware arsenal.

690459 2008-07-20 22:56:00 Thanks for advice people.

Avast picked up the virus and it got moved to the chest. I ran Adaware 2007, Superantispyware, Ccleaner Windows advanced care. All came out clean.
I still have no connectivity and when I went into Device manager my Intel Proset wireless had a yellow exclamation mark on it and when I right clicked on it, it said This device cannot work.

The icon for wireless in the system tray has a red cross on it and when I open it, it says No network adapter is available on this system. Wireless is off, turn wireless on by clicking "turn wireless on button".
There is no turn wireless on button anywhere that I can find.

Beginning to think it is a hardware prob. But I will get a HJT later on here today.

CCleaner removes cookies, tmp files and invalid reg entries, etc. It is NOT a malware scanner.

Right click the wireless and Enable.

690461 2008-07-20 23:21:00 Yes pctek, I am well aware what Ccleaner is and the difference between cookies etc and spyware and malware.
Have put malwarebytes on to flash drive and will try that soon. I have also right clicked on wireless and it said enabling and did nothing for half an hour or more then said cannot connect.
The proset wireless no longer appears in my Network connections. As I said I am beginning to suspect a hardware prob.

Delete it then reboot, see what happens

If that doesnt work, I would reinstall the drivers for it

690463 2008-07-20 23:52:00 Thanks Speedy, am just running Malwarebytes
I did uninstall it and reinstall it but didn't reboot in between so will try that next.

The mouse keeps freezing and I keep having to shut it down. It did it three times this morning. I wonder if trying a usb mouse (which I haven't got) would work?
