690203 2008-07-19 08:06:00 Hi all

going to be buying a new notebook in the next few weeks (yippie!!!:banana ) and I notice that most of them have "Recovery Disks" listed and not OEM OS Disks.
I have always had Desktops and have always had full OS disks so when I reformat I do a clean OS install.

Has reformatting (every year or so) become an "old fashioned" practice or is it still something others do?

Is there any way to get OEM at time of purchase or do I have to buy a full version & pay lots of $$$$

Or is it just me being fussy and will recovery disks be fine???

Many thanks

Meg

690204 2008-07-19 08:11:00 Well a recovery disk will have every program on that was installed when you bought it as well as the OS, whereas an OEM will only be the OS, but plenty of people still do reinstall every so often.

Only thing I found with a recovery disk is that I partitioned my HDD and then found out 18months later the recovery disk would no longer work as the configuration had been changed.

Hope this helps

690205 2008-07-19 08:29:00 A recovery disk usually has what the laptop / desktop needs (programs and all).

All you have to do, is burn the ISO for it to cd or dvd.

You could probably use an OEM cd (which is why it wont come with a CD), but then you would have to install all the drivers separately AFTER you've installed Windows

690207 2008-07-19 11:49:00 Thanks for the info guys!

I have never used Restore Cd's and so had no idea how they worked or what they contained.
I have always (with my desk top) formatted and then installed windows , then downloaded the latest drivers. This was probably my best option as in the past I was always adding/changing components.
Now with the new Notebook I wont be changing components so the recovery disk will be all I should need.

Have a great weekend
