690055 2008-07-18 10:49:00 Hi All,
I come again to partake of the wisdom of this forum.
I was helping a friend install AVG8 over the 7.5 version the other night, over the phone. I had previously sent her a disc with the install files on it.
While trying to instal it, a message appeared, to say install could not continue as the Windows version installed was not an original copy.

My question is, would Avast anti virus install on this machine, or give the same problem as AVG?

If this is so, is there another simple ,free, antivirus program that could be used?

I await your thoughts.

690056 2008-07-18 10:58:00 Avast should work. I would install it

AVG has had too many probs.

690059 2008-07-19 09:24:00 At the risk of being told I haven't got a clue (which I'm willing to accept), I haven't had a problem with AVG 8 (free), since updating from 7.5.
When I do, I'll be quite happy for you all to say "told you so"!

Thankyou, my friend will be most grateful, and I have learned something new.

690061 2008-07-19 16:34:00 AVG8 upgrade worked on the PC I was using AVG on, but I don't like AVG much either Agent_24 (57)
690062 2008-07-20 00:20:00 Don't use it myself, but two PC's I look after for friends (slightly older XP boxes) have really struggled with AVG 8.0 - they ran 7.5 ok but 8.0 seems more bloaty??

Have since recommended Avira to them

690063 2008-07-20 01:23:00 I found that switching off the resident shield in AVG made a big difference. (the shield really slows things down).

The virus scan still takes a lot longer in version 8 than any of the earlier versions though.

Might give Avast a go though ;)

690064 2008-07-20 03:23:00 Yeah, well turning any realtime protection off will help, since it's scanning all files as they are used/created etc, but turn that off and you've turned off 80% of your antivirus Agent_24 (57)
