| 434769 | 2006-03-01 04:09:00 | Hello All Just got a question about what happens to .nz domain names once they expire?? Do they come available once they expire?? & the owner does not want them any more or forgets to pay for them? Or do you have to wait so many days before they come available? Thanks :) |

Thanks :)I think usually you're given like 90 days notice before renewal date, then the domain is held for about 90 days (may be less?) after that date before its put back on the market... but I think for those last 90 days you cannot use that domain until you renew it. During that time you, or the UDAI holder, will have the exclusive option to renew it. After that, it's up for grabs. | Greg (193) | ||

There is a slight caveat to this, that the .nz registry automatically renews domain names. So at the end of the paid period, the registry automatically renews the domain name for a month and again each month after that (.nz domains are actually billed to registrars on a monthly unit). A domain name will only be cancelled if the Registrar (your ISP/hosting provider) explicitly requests cancellation. A domain cancelled less than 5 days after registration (in the grace period) is immediately released with no 90 pending release period. |
