434555 2006-02-28 09:54:00 Every local body in the country seems to have a roading development that seems to be dropped or put back 10 or so years because according to Transit etc "Auckland is the higher priority". For us its the Bell Block bypass, in Tauranga they had routes P,J,K; which they ended up using toll gates on, as they also did for the harbour bridge (and I will admit they left the tollgates on for way too long).

This brings me too an interesting question, why not toll Aucklanders for their roads? If Auckland is such a high priority that the rest of the country has to wait (again), why not toll them like they used to with the Auckland harbour bridge?
Apparently we already help Auckland with the extra cent or 2 added onto petrol taxes, so why should we suffer any more (after all, in reality, how often do the rest of us go to Auckland?)

What's your view on this?

434556 2006-02-28 09:56:00 Totally do it. Tolls for the win - it's worked elsewhere.

The "temporary" petrol tax for AKL never got lifted anyway, though I guess no on ever thought it would.

434560 2006-02-28 10:20:00 from memory, current policy requires an alternative free route to the pay route, so, in reality, people would likely block up the free route. Tux (606)
434561 2006-02-28 11:29:00 Did you really expect anyone who doesn't live in Auckland to say Aucklanders shouldn't pay tolls?

The rest of us have all got roading held up because of Auckland's gridlock problems, which are "supposedly" a more important use of the available cash.
Naturally we'd prefer that Aucklanders pay for their own roads, instead of us continuing to postpone necessary work on ours.

But the hard cold fact is that in a democracy numbers rule. And as Auckland has the numbers, it's entitled to get the lion's share of the roadng budget.
So - my self-interest says: Of course they should pay tolls, if that's the only way to fix their roading problems.
But - my logic says: Officialdom puts the money towards the greatest need - and I guess they won't think it's anywhere near me.

But nah, actually I think road tolls are a great idea. User Pays is mostly a good thing.

434564 2006-02-28 20:27:00 Raise the petrol price. Will get more people of the road. When it went to $1.60 it was a breeze to drive around.

However, we are already paying enough in petrol taxes, just make sure they are all directed to roads and not syphoned off for other things.
