| 433548 | 2006-03-02 19:19:00 | Seems to me the question on race is a roundabout way of asking whether you are maori or European. Probably not PC to ask outright. Even if they did ask the answer would be meaningless. I know a pair of twins who had a part Maori great grandmother. One of them says he is maori and the other says he is European. It makes you laugh. Me . I am a New Zealander. |

What is it with this forum where if someone has a differing opinion they either have to get over it or are tagged as whingers? This is part of having a debate / discussion . Actually Andrew, health funding does have ethnic elements . Maori for example suffer more from diabetes and heart disease . But I agree with you about being castigated for simply having a point of view . Keep it up . :thumbs: |

What Winston is referring to are primary healthcare programmes (largely preventaitve and educational programmes) targeted at high risk groups. Such programmes are designed to keep people out of hospital but unfortunately they don't get the funding they deserve and they don't quite reach the people they are intended to target (a proportion of which are Maori). I don't have any issues with this and keeping people out of hospital is a good thing. A |

I cannot think of any nation formed in recent centuries which is synonomous with an ethnic group . China and Japan have existed for millenia and they still have distinct ethnic sub-groups within their nations . Eg . China - Tartar, Han, Mongol, Tibetan, Manchu, Kazak etc etc . So answering the census question "New Zealander" might be emotionally satisfying but of no statistical value or interest at all . To avoid the kerfuffle perhaps there should be too questions - nationality, and ethnic group . That would satisfy peoples dignity as well as being informative . |
