433531 2006-02-28 09:15:00 Hi Greven. Kiwi friend of mine sent it from London where he is working for a year or so. Scouse (83)
433532 2006-02-28 20:40:00 New Zealand European
Maori
Samoan
Cook Island Maori
Tongan
Niuean
Chinese
Indian
Other (e.g. Dutch, etc.) ... as shown on the form.

I think they should change the question altogether. Ethnicity: NZer (all citizens will be).
Race - as above. Thats the point of the question really, in my opinion.
So they can look up places and say it has 35% Chinese, 25% Maori, etc etc...

Although dunno if Race is the right word...

I actually find "NZ European" slightly racist as there are dozens of countries in Europe so what is the point of this option........

Well lets be honest here, the "NZ European" question really means "Are you white". There is no other possible explanation. Its not a cultural question as there are so many different cultures in Europe.

I'm glad you raised that point because I absolutely agree. I believe the survey in itself is racist. I'd take your question one step further and read the question as a combination of 'Have you got white skin or not? And if not, we want to know more about you!' This is wrong and I think we are quite right to protest. But that's just my opinion......and no-one has yet answered my question of when does a country become an ethnic group?

Maybe we need to change to what Nationality and then what culture do you adhere too.

433537 2006-03-01 21:00:00 I can't see what all the fuss is about .

"European" obviously means white fullas and fullaesses . What's so difficult about that?

If they asked if you were 'caucasian' then to be consistent they'd have to ask Islanders if they were melanesian, micronesian, polynesion etc . on and on .

And for God's sake, you can't be proud of being a new Zealander because theres'no where to write it down on the Census form?

Get out more often .
