434082 2006-02-27 01:10:00 That list would be one of the best indicators I've seen yet of members' age groups.

The options may not suit even the youngies (as the thread starter obviously is) but at least they've probably heard of all the artists.

Next come those who've heard of some names, but couldn't identify their sound - or want to.

And I'd be surprised if anyone here over middle age would actually listen to more than 2 on this list - given the choice, that is. (Sometimes they're inflicted upon us)

We'd also argue about a suitable list, of course. None would please everyone - and we've got more years to go back.
But I doubt that any of these artists would be on the Top 10 of anyone over 50.
U2 might be popular, but Top 10..?

(Has just deleted several paras of rant re Beatles, Elvis, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez & assorted classical composers.
Reason - determined not to start " musical era argument."
Decided to merely not vote)

Out of that list of 10, only one name does not feature in the current NZ top 40 for either Singles or Albums. Interestingly, one who so far has had no votes in this poll has been in the NZ top 40 for 21 weeks... I, for one, wouldn't call myself a "youngie" (maybe you might want to define that?), but I have definitely heard all of the name groups/singers/whatever you want to call them, and usually the only current music I hear is on TV (I listen to MP3s at work, not the radio). It would be very difficult to pick a list (limited to 10 artists) that would please everybody... and then that defeats the purpose of a good poll anyway, doesn't it?

434084 2006-02-27 02:39:00 I'm with Laura on this one . I thought U2 was the coding they gave to a battery in the UK, or a spyplane, or something?

Ok, also playing now, some Tommy Dorsey, Stardust ( . com/Tommy%20Dorsey/Stardust . mp3" target="_blank">great-song-stylists-uk . com) with Sinatra, and some Bing Crosby Please ( . com/Bing%20Crosby/Crosby24/Please . mp3" target="_blank">great-song-stylists-uk . com) .
Sorry about the sound quality, it's not just the age and 78rpm .

434085 2006-02-27 03:33:00 Yes, Mike, "contemporary music" is a better definition. And obviously I find most of it merely background noise.

I've heard of 6 of those 10.
I could maybe identify 3 of those 6 - but only if the song was one of their hits.

I could name only 1 single which is currently on the Top 40 (and that's only because I know the artist)

The bad part is that I'm definitely out of touch.
The good part is that I don't care. I have loads of other choices.

(I seem to have turned into my mother - remembering what she thought of my music tastes when young. Funny, that...)

434086 2006-02-27 04:01:00 (I seem to have turned into my mother - remembering what she thought of my music tastes when young. Funny, that...)It seems the same is happening to me... and I know who all those artists are, and can name a few songs for most of them (and a lot of songs for a couple)... In fact I find I disagree with a lot of the music my wife listens too, and there's only 4-5 years difference in age :) I can't stand half the stuff that 14 year olds are listening to these days (and I can't understand the other half, so I don't know if I can stand it or not ;)). Mind you, I am getting on a bit these days :(

434087 2006-02-27 04:44:00 Take it from me, Mike - it gets better & worse.

Worse when you realise you've no idea what 14 year-olds are listening to nowadays. So you can't even judge it.

Better when you realise you don't have to know.
They expect you to be an old fogey about it & would be disappointed if you liked the music. After all, it's theirs.

What generation wants its teenage rebellion spoiled by the Olds not disapproving?

(Remembers father's reaction to length of boyfriends' hair - a la Beatles. Grumps around the world from the short-back-&-sides generation. But we'd have been horrified if they'd imitated it)

434088 2006-02-27 07:44:00 You don't give the option, NONE.

If you had I would have been able to vote.

434089 2006-02-27 08:02:00 The White Stripes is the closest thing to my kind of music, even though I don't particuly like them.

A genre poll would be much more suited than this current poll for 10 year old girls.

434090 2006-02-27 08:07:00 You've got it! The original poster is a FBI agent trawling through the forums looking for wierdos who like that kind of music. Therefore.....etc., mark c (247)
