690442 2008-07-21 07:45:00 After the problems, IBM sold their hard drive division to Hitachi. Initially I think the drives were pretty much the same... and 20GB is rather small(and old) so I don't think there would be much difference

I think it comes from the platters being made of glass, later drives were issued with warnings telling people not to use them for more than 8hrs a day

But now days I believe all the Hitachi drives are "normal" ones with metal platters

690443 2008-07-21 07:59:00 This site has examples of two failure sounds from IBM/Hitachi drives www.dataclinic.co.uk

Neither fault is an actual head crash.

The drives are just faulty design. And there is no fix for that

I opened the drive and spun it up, and it wouldn't read the discs properly. It's screwed now - one of the platters shattered.

690446 2008-07-21 09:22:00 That's what you get when they're made of glass - why IBM thought of making them out of glass I have no idea... Agent_24 (57)
690447 2008-07-21 09:30:00 Here's hoping my laptop's IBM drive won't fail... pcuser42 (130)
690448 2008-07-21 09:36:00 Should be fine, as far as I know the problem was only with the deskstars

(quickly searches google) or maybe not.....

Well I've got a Hitachi travelstar in mine (not default, I put it in there myself) but it seems to be fine

I also have a deskstar running linux (it's one of the later models, 120GXP I think) which seems to be working fine too.

But who knows.....?

690449 2008-07-21 09:51:00 my seagate drive made clicking noises. I was able to recover all the data from it before the smart status declared it a FAIL. utopian201 (6245)
690450 2008-07-21 20:54:00 I think the drive was so old it didn't have SMART  pcuser42 (130)
690451 2008-07-21 22:17:00 I think the drive was so old it didn't have SMART

If you're referring to the Deathstar it did have SMART but like most drives they fail before you get any warning.
