434361 2006-02-28 00:02:00 Of course, we will just ignore the fact this has been an ongoing problem for many months....

Didn't you even replace your router at one stage?

I wonder how many other customers were having teh same issue caused by that item of hardware and were just forced to live with it.....

I don't think 4 months to fix a problem or even admit that there is one can be called good service.
But then some people only want to see and believe what they want to.

Problem solved, but I'm not 100% sure how. I have just spent an hour on the phone to Xtra's help desk working on the problem with the most knowledgeable, patient and helpful guy you could ever hope to talk to. The call was answered in less than 30 seconds and I have been walked through every conceivable possibility.

We closed the call and I restored the last set of the trial settings back to my standard fixed IP addresses, then bugger me if the router didn't give up the struggle and decide to let me in again.

I'm still going to replace it though, because reliability is very important to my business and there is clearly something very strange wrong with this one.
It always amuses me how often I used to hear this - particularly from dialup customers on the cheapest possible plans "This is costing me thousands of dollars to be off-line"

If it was that important they'd get a real internet connection.

Obviously it wasn't that important to the business this time either

434363 2006-02-28 00:40:00 The point I was making was that they reponded well and competently when contacted, and accepted that there was a problem, though the initial techs had difficulties understanding how I could have two-way communication to log on, but still not get an IP address. To be frank, so did I.

And ninja, you might care to enlighten me as to what a "corner case" is, I'm not familiar with that expression. Also, if you can, could you let us know how those massive problems were resolved. I am still using the NI 500 and now I am on an Alcatel dslam which is providing improved connection and service speed. Maybe they did some mods to hardware or software to sort it out, it would be interesting to know.

Cheers

As well as the overheating problem the NI 500 had a problem with static IP addresses. You would think that known problems would become part of Helpdesk FAQs so that each occurance didn't have to be solved from first principles

434364 2006-02-28 02:55:00 Give Telecom some credit for ripping out all the Nokia hardware in the exchanges and replacing it with Alcatel cause the Nokia was ^%$. pctek (84)
434365 2006-02-28 02:56:00 Ahh, the dear old Nokia Ni500 router. I bought one about 3 or 4 years ago and could never get the DSL working on it. After numerous support calls to Telecom, my ISP and Nokia for no joy I sold it on TradeMe to a buyer in New Plymouth who reported no problem in getting it to work down there. See, when I spoke to Telecom support they said it was not a fault of their equipment. Then, a few weeks after I sold the router I read an article in the Herald where Telecom admitted the problems with the Nokia Ni500 was due to their changing their DSLAM hardware, as Ninja mentioned. Funny, the Telecom support never spoke of this to me. xmojo1 (4630)
434366 2006-02-28 03:05:00 I don't have a problem with Telecom either.
Me neither. I am not with them. :D

It was only the original blue version that overheated and AFAIK they were all replaced under warranty. I know mine was.

Re the quote from my previous post, the problem turned out to be so rare that I decided it was more time and cost efficient to live with it than to spend time working out how to configure the D-Link. Setting up the Nokia took all of two minutes using the supplied CD, but after reading the manual for the D-Link and asking questions on PF1 I was still confused, so I decided to stick with the devil I knew.

Interesting about the fixed IP addresses though, I'm glad I didn't need one myself. I'm also wondering why I was still connecting to a Nokia dslam if Telecom went through and replaced then all with Alacatels, and why I am enjoying better speed and faster connection now that I am on an Alcatel. I guess they debugged them.

Cheers

The problem was so rare that you posted again in Dec
It does not sound as if you were too happy about it and yet you heap praises on Xtra and Telecom for great service because they managed to fix it nearly 3 months later.

My dsl connection is down again for the third time in as many weeks. I can log-on and will be assigned an IP address but can't surf.

Jeez this is a bugger, it just spontaneously started again.

One minute there's nothing doing, next thing you know it is fully functional again.

Grrrrrrrrr............

434369 2006-02-28 04:49:00 Yawn.........

As pointed out several times, although I was a bit p'd off when the IP problem first started, it rapidly retreated to become a very occasional issue on weekends only, so once I had a handle on what was going on I never went back to ask Xtra to do anything further.

You can judge for yourself how occasional it was from the fact that it was less of a hassle to live with than it would have been to install the D-Link router. Until Sunday/Monday that is, when the situation worsened dramatically and became intolerable, at which point I asked again and the problem was promptly traced & fixed.

I was happy with the quality of service then and now, and I'm enjoying the increase in speed as well, though I never thought anything was wrong speed-wise in the past either, I put any noticeable slowness down to network traffic at peak times because it was otherwise very quick outside of those periods.

Cheers

434370 2006-02-28 04:58:00 I'd consider
up to 6mbps download and 600mbps upload, more or less and a 1GB cap). to be dead slow. :groan: At 6 or even 600 mbps (millibits/sec) it would take a very long time to hit the 1 GB cap. I'd demand megabits/sec (Mbps).
