For sure. For some stupid reason people kept expressing surprise that I was going to drive the $800 car to Invercargill and expect it to get there. Well yes it did, no water used, no oil used, no problem.

Just because a car looks crap doesn't mean anything. I'd rather have an $800 mechanically sound car than something worth a few thousand that looks pretty and ends up costing a small fortune in repairs - which happened to a friend of mine......

435869 2006-03-13 09:46:00 Me thinks that the dropping price of reliable cars is further proof that we are better off in these modern times, despite the endless complaining of those who wave their walking sticks in the air saying "those were the days"

Memory wears rose colored lenses my friends . . . .

personthingy has just moved to CHCH from the wild wet coast.
personthingy at 33 is a dole bludging parasite.
personthingy has $$, but only because of inheratence.
personthingy spends it fast on silly stuff.
personthingy does NOT own a computer.
personthingy has totally unreliable V8 holden, not even worth naming.
personthingy has dreams of getting a serious concert sound system together and doing fun things with it.

2006
personthingy has been in CHCH for 11 years now.
personthingy at 43 has job, just a casual one, but personthingy is working in the field personthingy loves, doing staging , lighting , etc.
personthingy has long since used up inheratence, but has enough to be comfortable, and has enough toys to suffocate himself, because technology is so cheap that personthingy is now stuck with the problem of getting rid of all the excess.
personthingy lives on the net, wherever he goes.
personthingy has totally reliable diesel truck called Esmarelda.
personthingy has worked himself to burnout, and having achieved his dreams, mainly in 2005, personthingy is now moving on.
personthingy has a concert sound system in his lounge, and W bins stacked up blocking his hallway.

Yes thats right... those were the days......

Both a figments of the imagination aren't they?

:D

435873 2006-03-13 14:25:00 Justakid, personthingy.
Too soon to get philosophical.

Memories aren't figments of my imagination yet - even though they're earlier...
like Peter, Paul & Mary & Bob Dylan & Joan Baez & the Kingston Trio...
And then the Beatles, of course.

You meet artists in your job. I did in mine. Some were wonderful & some disappointing. But isn't the first thrill always the biggest?
I was sent as a cadet reporter to interview Peter, Paul & Mary, top of the charts & my idols at the time. They invited me to have lunch with them. I didn't touch the ground for days...

The time to worry is when nothing gives you that feeling any more - not just from music artists, but from anything.
You're far too young to believe "those were the days" yet.

435874 2006-03-13 19:17:00 You're far too young to believe "those were the days" yet . Ooops . . . i was unsuccessfully being sarcastic .

The point i was trying to make is that just 10+ years ago it was almost impossible to achieve my dreams, where as a year ago it was so easy i was able to overdo them .

I should also mention that 10 years ago i knew people who were capable but couldn't find jobs . Now everyone i knew then who followed their ambitions have jobs in their fields of interest, and all the benificarys i know are either mad, lazy, retired, or solo parents .

These are easier times by far, particualy for those who work with technology .

I think it just suits some people to look for someone to blame when they discover that they cant have it all, and worse still, some effort will be required to get what is available . Govt and economy are easy targets to blame . The logic is not to dissimilar to teenage logic that decides that moms a ***** when confronted with the reality that said teenager wont be getting a new cellphone .

These are good times . We're blessed to be in such a beautiful country . We still can't have it all, we never could, we never will, but please, lets get over it

You did get lucky. Still I knew some backpackers who bought a $500 car so they could potter around NZ rather than renting. They are some good cars out there. Just need to know what to look for.

I rented an 2003 Hyundai, when my 1990 Mitsubishi was stolen. It felt like crap and your $800 car would probably be better too!
