690648 2008-07-21 01:21:00 Can anyone recommend me a good one? It's for a very non-techy mate, so the simpler the better!! :p nofam (9009)
690649 2008-07-21 01:23:00 Has he heard of Google? Speedy Gonzales (78)
690650 2008-07-21 01:25:00 Yes - I told him not to use google, because there's a high probability he'll end up at a spyware-infested site downloading more than a conversion utility!!

Like I said, he a bit of a n00b :crying

690651 2008-07-21 01:29:00 And how do you know that??

Not all sites are infested, unless he's going to warez sites

690652 2008-07-21 03:43:00 You won't find an easier program than Switch:

Does WMP not import as MP3?

It will unless it suspects that the MP3 or WMA is bootlegged or illegally gotten and unsigned..especially if they use WMP11.

There is a real problem that raises it's head to some people when they even try to play a homemade DVD...since it has NO digital signature to satisfy WMP's WGA.

Use Audacity..it works good ...make that GREAT.....but you need to get the LAME add-on.

If you are ripping from a CD, it certainly can  Under tools/options/Rip music you can select the format.

690656 2008-07-21 04:15:00 I used switch (www.nch.com.au) a while ago, worked great, but only for a month, or something, the you have to pay for it. But if he just has a bunch of files he wants converted, not an ongoing thing, it will be sweet. Hopefully they haven't changed it so it will only do the first 30 secs of each song, or something silly.

And yeah, if he's ripping from CDs, change the settings in WMP (Tools, Options, Rip Music) to MP3.

That is kind of what I had in mind.
