| 435091 | 2006-03-02 20:38:00 | Article in Thursday's NZ Herald, stating that the local councils in Auckland are thinking about "building a broadband network in Auckland to take on Telecom. They want to ensure Auckland businesses and residents have access to high-speed, affordable broadband. The first competition could come on the North Shore, where the council and power company Vector are looking to use spare fibre optic capacity on the Vector network to provide broadband. Auckland City councillor Richard Simpson said that to be internationally competitive, Auckland needed to match cities such as Stockholm and be committed to 1000 megabits-per-second broadband by the year 2010. At present, Telecom's jetstream dawdled along at less than 10 megabits, he said. " Read the full article here: Councils keen to fight telco (www.nzherald.co.nz) |

| 435097 | 2006-03-02 23:35:00 | Considering that you are in Invercargill what good would an Auckland network do you? Citylink started with fibre suspended from the trolleybus overhead and Telstra's cable is mostly overhead. There is a lot of opposition to overhead wiring now, will Auckland's councils underground their network? |

| 435098 | 2006-03-03 00:40:00 | A fair amount of South Auckland has done undergrounding. They did Papatoetoe a few years back down Shirley Road, Rangitoto Road and surounding areas and BOY did it make a difference! | bob_doe_nz (92) | ||
| 435099 | 2006-03-03 02:01:00 | So they are thinking about it. Right, every hold their breath. And you can bet if they ever do more than think it will get added to the rates. |
