691747 2008-07-24 11:12:00 Hi everyone,
My wife bought a new laptop last week which came with Vista Home premium .

Before this Vista laptop arrived our current two laptops and main PC all have Windows XP Pro loaded on them .

After I setup our wirless network using D-Link wireless router (connected by cable to our main PC) the current laptops with XP Pro can pick up both the network printer which is plugged into the back of the wireless router as well as the non-network printer which is connected to the main PC .

Now on the Vista laptop, when I tried to add printer and select the option "browse for a network printer . . . " it can only pick up the network printer plugged into the wireless router and not the colour printer which is attached to the main PC .

So why can't the Vista laptop pick up the other printer like both the other laptops with XP Pro can?

I have also saved network settings onto a flash drive from our main PC, plug it into the Vista laptop and the message came up "Do you want to add this computer to HOme1 network?" to which I clicked "yes", then I take the flash drive back to the main PC plug it in and the message said that the Vista laptop is now added to the network . So what else should I do? Why is the Vista laptop not picking up the other printer that is attached to the main PC? I hope someone can help . Thanks .

691748 2008-07-24 11:17:00 Make sure network Discovery is turned on in Vista, that may or may not be stopping the sharing :

Here is the method to enable network discovery:

1) Go to Start and right click on Network and then click Properties .

2) Network and Sharing Center window will appear, expand the Sharing and Discovery section and click Turn on network discovery, then click Apply . After that click View full map to see all connected network devices .

From This page here ( . home-network-help . com/network-discovery . html" target="_blank">www . home-network-help . com) - has pictures which may make it more clear .

691749 2008-07-24 12:53:00 Network discovery is already on . Still can't connect to printer . I read the article which advises to make sure it's Private network and that too is already the case - I've already selected Private network before troubleshooting my printer problem .

Someone says to make sure I have SP2, apparently Vista machine sold with SP2 don't have the same problem I'm experiencing . Is this a valid suggestion? I've looked up my system information and it doesn't even specify whether I have SP1 or SP2, it just says "Windows Vista Home Premium" . There must be something else .

691750 2008-07-24 19:25:00 There is no SP2 for Vista only SP1 released earlier this year gary67 (56)
691751 2008-07-24 21:31:00 The 4th post here (forums.microsoft.com) may be of some help. Have you changed the workgroup name under my computer properties to the same names as the others. spaceman8815 (4112)
691752 2008-07-24 21:42:00 My PC's ip address is 10.0.0.1, when i ping this on the vista laptop it shows:

Pinging0.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 10.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128
Reply from 10.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128
Reply from 10.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128
Reply from 10.0.0.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 10.0.0.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 <0% loss>,
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 1ms

So the Vista laptop can ping and yet when I type in ipconfig it doesn't show 10.0.0.1 in the list; it shows:

Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix .:
Link-local IPv6 Address.....:fe80::3088:25bc:8296:a04a%9
IPv4 Address...................:10.0.0.3
Subnet Mask...................: 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway..............: 10.1.1.1

Then on the main PC I ping the IPv4 address 10.0.0.3 and it came back with Request time out. So the XP Pro PC can't see the Vista laptop either.

691753 2008-07-24 21:56:00 Disable IPv6 in Vista Speedy Gonzales (78)
691754 2008-07-24 21:57:00 Are the PC's and laptop only connected on the 1 router, and no other devices in between - the reason it more than likely wont talk is the IP address is all wrong.

Look at the Default gateway 10.1.1.1 yet the PC is 10.0.0.1, it should be 10.1.1.X with X being a number between 2 & 255.

691755 2008-07-24 22:10:00 True it sounds like your LAN isnt within the range of the router Speedy Gonzales (78)
691756 2008-07-25 02:47:00 How do you disable IPv6?

I have a wireless D-Link router, Wireless ADSL 2+ Router, DSL -604T . It has 4 ports .

My mian PC is connected to the above router via ethernet cable . Main PC has the IP address is 10 . 0 . 0 . 3

My Brother laser printer is also connected to same router by another ethernet cord . Brother laser printer has IP 10 . 0 . 0 . 4_1

Then I have an HP colour printer connected to the main PC vis USB cable .

Then the two laptops running XP Pro have wireless modems and are connected to the router above wirelessly .

As I mentioned at the start, our two laptops running XP Pro can print to the HP colour printer which is attached to the main computer . The two laptops had no problems in seraching for available printers on the wireless network and picked up both the Brother printer and HP colour printer .

The Vista laptop can only see, and connect to the Brother printer which is connected to the wireless modem but not the HP colour printer .
