Sounds like a dead backlight. Is there still an image on the screeen if you look at it close up (eg. the LCD layer could still be working, just no light coming through it)

robbyp yep that's exactly what is happening........(I had to clean the screen to see this lol it was pretty grubby)

the initial pic is fine then about 2 seconds later it goes very faint....i can see the image but it's pretty hard to make out......

does this mean the backlight is failing and if so do you haev any idea if this will be repairable and if so what's it cost approx ?

691448 2008-07-24 00:45:00 did you have a look at that link of mine - same thing general with genearal info on repairing bevy121 (117)
691449 2008-07-24 00:49:00 Yep, backlight died. Not normally worth repairing. Seeing as you were given it though, it may be worth spending $100 - $150 getting it fixed.

Ive never looked for parts for dell monitors in NZ, but if you can get the part, installing it yourself isn't too hard.

691450 2008-07-24 00:51:00 I have a 17" phillips here doing the same thing!! SolMiester (139)
691451 2008-07-24 01:27:00 seems like difficult things to source here in NZ from having a quick google around.

Are these the same type of backlights that are listed here? (store.yahoo.com) (this ones California I think)
