437240 2006-03-10 21:16:00 I kinda like it. But there's something I find difficult to describe that is off-putting. The Flash image on the front page goes against my sensibilities - it's not too big or slow to load, but the flashing graphic is a pain.

The excessive spaces between your paragraphs are annoying.

The Times/New Roman font is ugly.

The shrunken logo image is lousy - I'd like to see it reduced in size and displayed full-size.

Background colour might be a bit better in a charcoal grey rather than black, or use a tasteful dark horizontal lined background image.

Too much inconsistency with the logo placement.

But I like the design and navigation. And on my 2MB connection it's really slick to load.

I reckon it just needs a bit of tidying up, and a re-look at the colours and fonts.

And remember to properly name your page titles.

437241 2006-03-10 21:17:00 I like it.
The buttons on the fisrt page are rather large and you dont see them all unless you scroll down. Most people cant be bothered scrolling down unless they are interested.
Since the enter button is in front of them they wont scroll down.
Maybe you could make it all smaller so it can be viewed without scrolling down?

I'm using firefox 1.501

(p/s, i'm not a web designer as you can tell by all the mistakes in my website :o I'm just going by first impressions)

437242 2006-03-10 21:36:00 It is nice and simple, and not overdone with text or graphics. :)

However I do have some suggestions:
You are missing your header tags. The browser should display "En-Visage" at least in the titlebar/tab, but you just have http://www.en-visage.net.nz/ displayed.

On your first page, it appears that the credits is the most important item on display. What is this website for? The En-Visage company or who made the website? Get rid of the first page and have the site open directly to the page about the company; that is what you are trying to sell. Put your links about the website credits and the developers in small font at the bottom.

White font on black background can be hard to read, but blue font on black background is very difficult to read.

On www.en-visage.net.nz the text fills the whole width of the page. It would be easier to read if you had this with free space either side of the text.

Your credits page is all over the place (this is with Firefox) and not aligned in a visually attractive way.

On your main page, my preference would be to have the navigation bar down the left-hand margin, with each section displayed with the sub-menu contents. Easy to see what you have on offer.

Eg:

Photography
Glamour
Portrait
Wedding
Baby Portrait
The Bare Essentials
Expressions
Hair and Makeup
Overview
Hairstyling
Makeup

437243 2006-03-10 21:41:00 Another thing i've noticed is that on a couple of pages the navigation links bar goes to the right while the rest stays centralised.
Pages are, Make up & Hair styling.

Also in the photography section some pages have alot of photos and you have to scroll sdeways to see them all. Maybe have two rows to keep them together or have another page?.

Nice photograhy by the way.

437244 2006-03-10 21:53:00 Bad news for you techiekid - your navigation links do not work in Opera so I am unable to go any further than the index2 page. Tsk tsk tsk. :groan:

Have no idea why and can't be bothered trying to find out but you would be wise to investigate this yourself and fix it. Your pages should be viewable in ALL browsers. ;)

Other than that I would be making the home page (index2) fixed width with perhaps a thin line border around it as a margin to make it look more attractive. Remember to make the width small enough to fit on 800 x 600 monitors without horizontal scroll bars, and preferably no vertical scroll bars on the home page either, if you can.

437245 2006-03-10 22:06:00 The first page has 4 main elements;

A pointless flash animation of text
A big enter button
A big credits button
A big link to "Visual Data Connections" (which doesn't seem to work) .

On the credits page we have a link to the "developers" site which 404's and a "message from the developer" . Scrap all the self references, except for maybe one small link and logo - I'm there (in theory) to find out about the company primarily, not who did their web-site .

If I was to hit that site from a search or an ad I would never have made it past the first page . It's unattractive, it's another step to any real information which is just irritating, it claims to support IE only which isn't really acceptable these days .

I strongly suggest scrapping the "Intro" page" and just getting straight to the content .

I'm surprised the client (if they've seen this) is happy with the fact that a good portion of their web-site - particularly the initial impact - is geared around your self-promotion rather than theirs .

Once venturing inside, the layout changes from page to page, the font changes from page to page, as does the background colour .

There needs to be a consistent look and feel, similar fonts, text colour and size, keep the logo the same size, don't use serif fonts, AVOID USING ALL CAPS, make sure the navigation bar stays in the same place . Avoid hard black as a background colour - it's very hard to design off, and it detracts from the photos .

Give the pages proper titles instead of "New Page 1"

The "expressions" page has enquiries spelt wrong on the button, and spelt wrong (but a different wrong) in the text directly above . Amongst a host of other spelling errors across the pages .

The photos are really good, try and avoid having to side scroll to view them - I'm on a 21" widescreen LCD and I had to scroll - it's be a lot worse on a 15"-17" CRT like most have . Would be worth considering having one large photo immediately on each page as well as the thumbnails - thumbnails don't attract attention .

Generally having a "last updated" thing is a bad move for sites that don't change much - and the over enthusiastic links to Copyright laws etc could be dropped (or made itsy bitsy) .

Try throwing in some colour too .

Ha ha, someone has just pointed this out to me:

This site is best displayed using internet explorer on windows as full functionality can be guaranteed .
Proves my point somewhat about not having scrollbars on the homepage being as I missed that due to not bothering to scroll right down .

I still highly recommend that you design your pages to be viewable in all web browsers .

I agree with FoxyMX here :)

437248 2006-03-11 00:56:00 I know little about web-design but I like what you've done . However I also think that the above suggestions are sensible improvements and worth trying .

Good on you for having the courage to ask . As for IE, I'm in FF today (Opera normally) and don't know what I've missed but accept that most casual surfers use IE .
