| 437103 | 2006-03-10 04:18:00 | Dear all, I just wanted to let you know that I'm doing the World Vision 40 Hour Famine this year. I'll be helping to stamp out child labour around the world by taking part but I need your help. Please sponsor me to take part in the Famine. It will make a world of difference, creating hope and a future for many children's lives. You could sponsor me in person or also online at www.famine.org.nz through my own online Famine Book. It's as easy as clicking the link and providing your details. The Famine website is secure and accepts all major credit cards. For more information regarding the famine, click here (www.famine.org.nz) . For wiki details, click here (en.wikipedia.org) Thank you for considering sponsoring me and helping stamp out child labour. P.S. This fund-raising activity is done with the permission from Bruce Buckman and Jen. Thank you very much :) |

Collect the donations by all means, but don't bother to fake starvation.Therein lies the reason I won't support it (well among others). Its like, "We are doing a 40 hour famine, yet we are allowed Just Juice and barley sugars" Am I the only one saying 'Helloooooooooooooo'?? I don't remember the African nations even having barley sugars or knowing what Just Juice is. A famine is just that, no food and minimal WATER.. not some half-assed attempt with barley sugars and Just Juice |

| 437109 | 2006-03-10 06:33:00 | It is Correct. It is to try and reduce famine or lack of food. However children are being forced to work to get the money to buy the food. There IS a connection. |

| 437111 | 2006-03-10 07:08:00 | Your criticism of the 40 hour famine may be technically correct, Tazz, but it's not realistic to expect NZ kids to suddenly stop taking any nourishment at all for a weekend. People who are genuinely starving have stomachs which have shrunk gradually. Some children who make the effort here are very young. There'd be enough faintings to make some parents of well-fed kids wary about giving their permission. On the other hand, skipping solid food for that period shouldn't hurt healthy young people - just give them enough discomfort to feel they've made some sacrifice for the cause. Sure that's not real famine, but it should give them some warm fuzzies for at least making the effort. (And in my own experience - at the sponsor end - it beats most other blackmail topics for getting assorted Olds to hand over some cash) |

Me personally I would be more prepared to offer some form of contraception. Some years ago the country first on the list to in fact double its population was Rawanda this from Encarta circa 1998. On a starvation diet Women will be less likely to conceive in the first place and I will not go into why. |
