2006-03-09 06:59:00 | Quite illogical nonsense, I repeat nonsense, no-sense :) Line rental is just that, line rental, whether it is for ADSL data or analogue phone signals, whether or not a phone happens to be plugged onto your line or not. It just happens that a telephone number is used to identify your activated line, whether you use a phone or not. It is no different to power/gas line charges, or charges for a mains water pipe connected to your house whether you use any water or not. :2cents:

2006-03-09 07:19:00 | With Telecom strongly opposed to LLU, unconstrained naked DSL offers a far simpler, quicker and more cost-effective way to immediately enhance broadband competition in New Zealand and provide instant pricing and product benefits to customers. www.ispanz.org.nz/pdf/ISPANZ_position_paper-Naked_DSL.pdf

2006-03-09 07:36:00 | Line rental is a scam, Genisis never used to charge me on months when we didn't use any gas, maintence on THEIR gear came out of their profits, Then they see Telecom raping the land and they get on the bandwagon, now I have a monthly gas bill no matter what. Sure they have to make enough to cover their costs and make a profit, but they aren't starving for cash, If anything line rental should be a nominal fee, Instead its a rort where I pay a sum in no way related to cost for the connection that is used for them to make money off me. Going back to Aussie as a comparison, Line rental was a pittance, And we paid a few cents everytime we made a local call, Far better system. Dont use the phone much?, then its reflected in your bill. Anyhow, havent read the linked articles, But screw telecom.

2006-03-09 07:36:00 | Got to say that Terrys point remains... "naked" DSL is a myth, it's a contradiction in terms. One cannot have DSL without a copper pair coming into your building from the grid.... Sure, LLU would make that line somewhat less telecoms, but at the end of the day, dispite me firmly believing that Telecom are a pack of monopolist parasites.. i feel that they have the right to charge someone for the use of that copper pair that runs in all probability all the way to a telecom phone exchange via telecom fibre The potentual option of not having a phone number attached to that line as well does seem to justify some discount, but not zero line rental. I don't agree that a phone number is needed to identify the line. The pairs have long since been labeled a little better than that, although it can make life easier when the techs have to ask Joe Blo what the last use of the line where DSL is now required was..

2006-03-09 07:40:00 | That sounds as much like simplistic double talk to me as Telecom puts out. Lines and associated equipment and maintenance still have to be paid for. There is no numerical analysis in that paper to back up what they say, so there is no reason to believe what it says :)

When i lived on the Wild Wet Coast i had to go without electricity owing to a lack of $$ and STILL got an ongoing $30/month bill for line charge after the power was cut off disconection. The only way to get rid of the charge was to let them take back thier overhead power cable to my house, and take back the meters.. Buller electricity didn't like me turning up in the office with the electricity meter to plonk on the receptionists desk, :D but stuff them... i wasn't going to pay for a service they disconected, and even less was i going to pay for them to come back a second time for the meters they told me they wouldn't take from an unlocked and unattended house. The responce was great... Mr stuffed shirt told me i wasn't allowed to remove the meters myself and bring them in while he stood oppisite me seperated only by a bench with my/thier meter on it. He then took the meter. Telecom, on the other hand have never charged me for unused lines. When the phone is dead, so is further charges. |

2006-03-09 08:21:00 | Anyway, the complaint in the Herald letter was about having to pay for "a home phone. Even if you don't want it" | Terry Porritt (14) | |
2006-03-09 08:24:00 | I would be happy to pay a realistic line rental if I didn't want a phone account but required the use of the lines for net feed.Less then a tenner would be fine. I dislike....well....nearly everything....muhahahaha.....But don't expect a free lunch.
