P Jackson had remote links to some of the sets of LOTR and Weta have most of their computing power remotely hosted in a Telecom building in central Wellington. That must entail some serious data links.Weta and their huge supercomputer cluster, have their own 1 GB/s ethernet cable link between the supercomputer cluster and their workshop (both located in Wellington). Think it was part of a deal in which Telecom can have access to time on the supercomputers (going from memory). |

2006-03-14 06:05:00 | I think it will actually benefit the movie makers and some N.Z companies.. WETA would be one of them. They have made a name for themselves internationally now, and N.Z production companies are also becoming better known through movies like LOTR,Narnia, etc.Maybe some of the film makers and Weta already have much better relationships with Telecom than some ISPs. P Jackson had remote links to some of the sets of LOTR and Weta have most of their computing power remotely hosted in a Telecom building in central Wellington. Think it was part of a deal in which Telecom can have access to time on the supercomputers (going from memory). I was trying to find some details of the links to the US from Wingnut/Weta etc and found this "There is now a 10Gbit link to Weta Digitals 1000 processor renderwall and, across the Miramar network, there is a single gigabit connection between the various offices and facilities. " Miramar is 20 minutes drive from Telecom's Central Exchange that houses the computers.

2006-03-14 07:59:00 | I think this is the first time in my life I have ever wanted to be an Australian!! O to be able to download a gig in under 3 minutes, that would take me all night and most of the following day! Mik

2006-03-14 22:02:00 | Good stuff Qyiet and exactly what we are looking for . I'll start a fresh thread for more ideas . So far as Landonline is concerned, we used dialup for a couple of years and it was a pain . Now on Jetstream it is fine but the problems we experience are at the LINZ end - nothing to do with broadband . LINZ definatly don't have everything sorted, and we have several locations using jetstream for landonline just fine . The bandwidth provided by jetstream was not the problem, the QoS was . Telecom's jetstream would drop for approx 10 sec every 5 min or so this would destroy the citrix session . The problem lay at the exchange, and everyone else using similar applications in the area was affected . No ammont of evidence presented to telecom would convince them otherwise, so 3 DSL modems, 1 UPS (for the modems) and 2 Routers later we abandoned them . We spent several months attempting to get telecom to fix this problem . and were very lucky to find an alternitive . In this case it was not the policy of upload/download that was the problem, or the data caps . . just that they had no competition, and therefore didn't care . I was flat told by telecom a telecom rep that the only way for us to get enough QoS to run landonline in that location was to get frame relay for a massive monthly fee, and of course a much more expensive router . . this to me felt a lot like abusing their monopoly . -Qyiet

2006-03-15 22:17:00 | Just picked up a couple of comments elsewhere, on the Sunday program . Allegedly John Hudson is a personal friend of Annette Presley at Slingshot . Also only 70,000 Australians out of 20 million get 24mbps . Interestingly Slingshot operate in Oz where LLU has been introduced but don't operate broadband . http://www . slingshot . com . au/ So here we have a business excoriating Telecom but can't offer broadband in a competitive market where they already operate . As I said, shallow reporting . :angry
