It's up to you what you want to do - you could leave it as it is - or you could back up any important data, wipe the hard drive (If you completely wipe it - that will solve both problems) and the install XP Home. Obviously if you don't have the XP Home disk, you're up poo creek, but you can always borrow someone else's, then install the PC drivers, Sp3 and all the windows updates.

As long as you have the COA, then use another XP home CD, deleting the partition, then recreating it in the options when booting from CD will for all intense purposes remove any sign of previous data.

You will need to open the case and find out the Motherboard make and model, download the drivers, unless its a name brand and then go to the manufactures site and get drivers. - Clean install always better, may take a bit longer, but worth the time.

If a data recovery expert wanted to they could prob get the data back, but unless you have the tools and knowledge - It's all's gone.

691598 2008-07-24 03:36:00 heres what to do, I'm doing it to a customers PC and writing at the same time ( different PC of course :p )

Save all data you dont want lost to another media - CD/ External drive.

Load in the PC, shut down and then boot, press any key when booting from CD when asked.

Boot from CD ( you'll see drivers loading)

You will get a screen, top one says -- To set up windows Press Enter--

Press Enter

Press F8 to agree to licence

At this time it will find your Old OS, Press ESC to carry on

C: Drive should be selected

Press D to delete the partition

Press Enter

Press L

Press Enter

Select bottom Option Format NTFS

Press Enter -

Windows will now format the drive, and load windows - go make a cuppa and wait - follow onscreen instructions as they appear. Should take around an Hour.

691601 2008-07-24 03:56:00 Quick way to check if its legit (As it sounds like it may not be): www.microsoft.com

I agree, a clean install would be the safest way to make sure something un-expected doesnt "appear" at any point in the future...

691602 2008-07-24 04:02:00 Slight Typo -
Load in the PC, shut down and then boot, press any key when booting from CD when asked.
Should have been Place CD in Drive, shut down >>>>>>>>>

you will see the "Press any Key" down the bottom left corner, keep an eye for it, as it doesn't stay visible for long, if you miss it, reboot from CD and start again - but be quicker :D
