437113 2006-03-10 07:39:00 Your criticism of the 40 hour famine may be technically correct, Tazz, but it's not realistic to expect NZ kids to suddenly stop taking any nourishment at all for a weekend.

People who are genuinely starving have stomachs which have shrunk gradually.

Some children who make the effort here are very young. There'd be enough faintings to make some parents of well-fed kids wary about giving their permission.I realise that, and while I will support a young kid (up to say 10-11) in an effort to do their bit, I do feel that especially teens could make more of an effort. 40 hours with barley sugars and Just Juice is more like a school camp to many teens.

437114 2006-03-10 20:28:00 More details please, James.

Is it this weekend or later?
Who checks to make sure you're not eating?
Are you doing it in a group or alone?
Hello Laura. I plan to do the "no technology" famine for 40 hours during the weekdays (i.e. the following week). Technology, in this context, includes cellphone, television, stereo, computer and basically most products that run on either battery or electricity (I don't think watch or clock is included in this case). Dad would certainly object if I choose to do the food famine. My sister - she is doing the techno famine as well - and my parents would be supervising and reminding me not to use any technology products. I guess you could say I am doing this alone, though I have my sister as company  . At the same time, I have to worry about raising funds. Thanks for your support.

Cheers :)

Also there is an irony in trying to get sponsorship for a "no technology" famine (I'm sure these things are getting lamer by the year) on an INTERNET forum.

437117 2006-03-10 22:31:00 They have no techno famines?????? :dogeye:

***??? are we that lame that we need to do no techno famines in support of the impoverished nations?

I thought the idea of a famine was to sacrifice a need for a certain period, not a want.

437118 2006-03-11 06:15:00 I also didn't realise the famine idea had expanded further than food.

I'm hard-hearted enough to believe the no-technology option should be longer than 40 hours to be the equivalent of hunger pangs.

But as I'd really miss only TV & the computer, I guess that's my age - or greed - showing.

437119 2006-03-11 07:33:00 A lot of weight can be lost if you spend 2 weeks tramping and carrying your own de-hydrated food for that period of time. In fact that is probably the best way to lose weight and get fitter at the same time.
Pack weight will be about 25Kg initially for 14 days.
Then donate all the money you have saved on electricity bills to whatever the cause is.

So you're not actually going to do it all in one go then? You're going to spread the 40 hours over the week??

Hello Ninja . I believe that everything has its limit, though I can't disagree that famine has no limit at all . By doing the technology famine, I will be abstaining from using almost all technology products . In a way, this is to let me have a lil taste of what is "famine" (i . e . not able to get what I want, such as luxuries and gadgets all the time) . Think of the fasting period (puasa) practised by the muslims during certain month of the year . They do not abstain from food all the time (i . e . they have got a starting and ending time for a day - based on the moon phase)

The ironiness would not be so irony if I don't use the computer during the famine period . ;)

I sincerely hope that there would be people willing to sponsor me . If you still think that I am being stupid, just simply think of helping others .

Cheers :)

On a second thought, I am going to do the famine on the 25th and 25th of March. Nope, I am going to do it in one go.

Cheers :)
