691586 2008-07-24 01:40:00 hello folks

have recently aquired a reasonable pc from an oe bound workmate that is to go to my god son
on the surface it comes up good when fired up tho the win xp is illegal
checked the system with recuva and found the seller had removed a lot of files that are unsuitable for young eyes
am worried that the eventual recipients inquisitive tech nature may find them

1. is there a good quality freeware to permanently remove unwanted deleted files or do i have to buy it, if so what is recommended

2. is there a cheap way of legitimising the win xp

any suggestions would be appreciated

691587 2008-07-24 02:30:00 Not really an easy/cheap way to legitimise XP - does the PC not have a Certificate Of Authenticity (COA) attached to the case with a license key??

To permanently delete the files, download & install CCleaner from here (www.filehippo.com). Tick all the options down the lefthand side, then go to options, settings and activate the Secure Deletion option, setting that to NSA (7 passes).

Then go back to the Cleaner screen, shut down any open programs, run an Analyse, and then click Run Cleaner.

Forgot to mention, the scan also includes emptying the recycle bin (still with the secure deletion option) so it will permanently remove anything there too that's already been deleted from other folders etc

COA is for earlier XP home edition
it appears with my limited knowledge someone has crashed it in the past and installed a new 120G HD and the uploaded Win XP pro with Sp3 updates

as for the cc
it is installed i will try what you suggested
and make another post

691589 2008-07-24 02:47:00 Cool - hopefully Wainuitech/Wratterus/Speedy et al will be along to give you the why's and wherefore's on how many components you can change in a PC before Windows throws a sulk :D nofam (9009)
691590 2008-07-24 02:57:00 thanks again nofam

I hate it when people do that! :crying :p

You have the COA, but unfortunately it's for the wrong version of Windows. Service pack versions don't normally matter.

It's up to you what you want to do - you could leave it as it is - or you could back up any important data, wipe the hard drive (If you completely wipe it - that will solve both problems) and the install XP Home. Obviously if you don't have the XP Home disk, you're up poo creek, but you can always borrow someone else's, then install the PC drivers, Sp3 and all the windows updates.

I'd tend to go with that option, also means he gets a nice fresh install of Windows.

Edit - mate, only JUST beat you to it as well! :p

691592 2008-07-24 02:58:00 If it was me, I'd format the drive and do a nice clean install of xp home using the COE on the machine.

I know - it's a bit of work, but you're godson will start out with a nice clean and fresh very responsive system.

You'd need a XP home disc to do the install, but shouldn'd be hard to find if you don't have one yourself.

You can use anyones - it's the COE serial that you need to authenticate it.

*EDIT*

LOL wratterus - snap again! ;)

691595 2008-07-24 03:13:00 hey wratterus & bevy121

sounds good advice

as i understand it i should do the following

1. backup up all programs & files i think necessary for his use
2. totally wipe hard drive (Q.how do i go about that?)
3. install XP home from disk
4. install PC drivers (Q. not sure what you mean by that-although ben may know)
5. check for and install updates

hope i've got it right
